This generation of aircraft, developed before the appearance of supersonic aerodynamic design, missiles, computers and electronic warfare, was the last generation in which airmen could feel totally in control of their environment, and the experience was a powerful one.

Best of the best...

I bought this book new from the Smithsonian Museum bookstore when I was just a kid. Now some 20-odd years later it still sits on the shelf right behind my desk, and I still frequently comb through its pages with the same enthusiasm I had when it was new. I will never let this book out of my possesion.

It's so valuable to me I had to find another copy for my business partner and fellow R/C fanatic so that he wouldn't have to keep borrowing mine! ;D ...that's why I decided to drop my 2-cents in here.

If you are an airplane buff, or more importantly, if you have any passion for the top planes of WWII, this book is not optional. You MUST have it. Period. Once you open it, you will understand what I am saying.

The Bible of World War II Aviation

I fell in love with this book when I was 10 years old, and I can say without hesitation that I owe my subsequent fascination with military history directly from thumbing through its pages at that early age. The other reviewers are not exaggerating, this book is THE BIBLE of WWII aviation. The aircraft profiled, though limited to 12 key models, are wisely chosen, all having had an enormous impact on the war, being in service through most, if not all, of the conflict, and all being instumental in their nations war efforts (and final victory as in the case of the Allied machines).

This book occupies a proud space on my bookshelf, and every now and then I will take it down and nostaligically thumb through its slightly worn pages. It never gets old. If this book was $300 it would still be a good buy.

What really takes the cake is without a doubt the full color fold outs by Watanabe. If you can find better ones elsewhere I am Kaiser Willhelm! The planes practically leap out at you; every screw, nut, and bolt is there. On several profiles the detail is so astounding you can see the oil streaks on the engine cowling and the weathered paint at the wing root where the pilot would have stepped time and again to climb into his cockpit and zoom into history.

Even if you only have a passing interest in WWII, you must buy this book. Do it now, before it is too late!

Book Review, Notes of a Book Lover.com I am not a student of politics nor current affairs. As such, I am unable to critique on the validity of the opinions and arguments stated in the book. However, as a layman, I am able to provide you with my opinions of the book. First and foremost, I enjoyed reading this book immensely! This was definitely a feat because I have never been interested in current affairs or politics. To be honest, I am rather apathetic about current affairs (totally bad, I know). However, Tom Plate's writing style was so interesting that this book captured my attention throughout! Second, this book provided me with so much information and insights into Asia and the relationships between the Asian countries and other countries. Most importantly, this book has ignited an interest in apathetic me to understand more about current affairs. In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this book and have learnt much about Asia and its relations with other countries. More importantly, this book has ignited an interest in apathetic me to understand more about current affairs. As such, I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in politics, current affairs or Asia.

Tom Plate is an experienced writer, journalist and syndicated columnist. He is currently Distinguished Scholar of Asian and Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he founded The New ASIA MEDIA website.

Thanks to my Asia reporter!

I wouldn’t know very much about the vibrant, complex and diverse countries of Asia without Tom Plate’s first-hand coverage over the years, for the LA Times and then as a journalist and university professor. He knew way back, and seemingly only he, that a very big story was developing. It’s downright dramatic to read so many of his columns one after another in this fascinating recounting of Asia’s emergence onto the global economic and geopolitical stage. There’s something refreshingly accessible about Plate’s “your man on the scene” kind of reporting. It is far from the this-happened-here-that-happened-there kind of news about a distant country or event, and even farther from the sound bites we’re used to seeing on TV. Plate is there, talking and interacting with people, taking in the environments. You get to see Asia through is eyes and sensibilities. His accounts are very sophisticated and smart and yet convey his very personal reactions to the people he interviews and events he witnesses. He’s got opinions and isn’t shy about sharing them, but if we were there too we’d probably feel the same way. Long may Plate be there for us and write!

I enjoy books that focus on human evolution

I enjoy books that focus on human evolution, and "Sapiens" is the perfect thing for that. This summary, in my opinion, is perfect. It highlights all the key details of the full book, and helped to refresh my mind on some of the things I had forgotten. You get an in-depth look at the people mentioned throughout the book as well. It's a fast read full of useful information without all the fluff in the original. Would highly recommend.

Very interesting indeed!

A nice book to read if you want to have a crash course in human history. Honestly, most of the people right now already have no idea about human history…it’s like they’ve already forgotten what they’ve learn from school! Dr. Yuval Harari did a great job in keeping things casual and not like those classroom type discussion that are boring. The book is noticeably well-researched and substantive…this can even substitute for a regular academic book! Kodus to the author for a great and interesting book!

Good summary

The book Sapiens was one of my readings in school but I never fully got to comprehend its meaning and pretty much winged it. After seeing this book, I thought I'd get it and re-read the summary to see if my understanding of the book was even close to the real meaning. The book is pretty well-written and kept things short. Didn't go overboard with trying to explain each chapter. Dr. Harari is amazing and this book somehow gave me a preview of what he was thinking.

Grade 1-4-- Minna, a young Appalachian girl, wants very badly to attend school, but she doesn't have a coat. Her father has just died and her family cannot afford one. When a group of mothers who gather at her house regularly to make quilts hear of her predicament, they decide to help her. Minna is thrilled, but when the new coat is finished and she wears it to the one-room schoolhouse, she is teased by her classmates for wearing rags. Minna is hurt, but she eventually gains their interest when she explains that her coat is full of stories--their stories--for each scrap has come from one of their homes. The children are enthralled and sorry for their taunts. Mills's care and attention to details make her book as charming as her narrative. The paper is a cream color, and the watercolor palette is warm but faded to give an antique cast to the illustrations. The large, lovely paintings that bring the characters and period to life are balanced by text on the bottom half of the left-hand pages; the generous blank space is filled with small scraps of colorful cloth. The writing is lyrical; its heartwarming message emphasizes the value of a community and sharing. Minna's family can't afford a coat for her, but Papa keeps her warm in winter with a burlap sack and Mama's patchwork quilt; this happy family understands that ``People only need people, and nothing else.'' Soon, Minna loses one of those people: Papa, a coal miner, gets the lung sickness and dies, after urging eight- year-old Minna to start school. There's still the problem of the coat, solved by neighbors who contribute scraps and help to make one of patchwork lined with the old sack, ready almost as soon as cold weather begins. At first, the other children tease Minna about her outlandish garment; then, learning that the patchwork contains bits of their own histories, they begin to honor Minna and the stories she tells about the coat's many pieces. This sweet, sober tale about love and good will overcoming poverty is reminiscent of Marguerite de Angeli's thoughtful books--especially in the soft, delicately detailed illustrations with their subtly poignant charcterizations and lovingly evoked setting in time past. Lauren Mills has won acclaim both as an author/illustrator and as a sculptor. One of the most touching and beautiful stories I have ever read! A little girl loses the father she so deeply loves, but never forgets the important lessons he taught her or the love he had for her. Her dream is to go to school, but her family can't buy her a coat. Finally, kind friends of her mama help make her a coat out of quilt pieces. Her excitement at wearing her new coat to school and sharing it with her new friends quickly changes to sadness when she is taunted by her playmates. But she remembers her father's lessons and his love and helps her friends come to see how special her coat is--to ALL of them! This story is part of the reading series I teach from and when I read it for the first time last year, my class was staring at me in amazement as I sobbed my way through the end! I had to get a copy for myself and my little girl!

deeply moving story of dealing with sorrow and teasing

I must confess, I was not prepared to read my 5 year old a book on death...and I was a little shocked to find out during my first time reading it to her (I guess I should have pre-read it). Even so, I loved it, and so did she! This story deals with the sorrow of death and the humiliation of poverty in a real and positive way, without being sentimental. It is beautiful to see a child come up with a loving solution to her problems.

Great follow-up to Bricks Matter!

“Metrics that Matter” is a great follow-up book to “Bricks Matter." Once again Lora takes a complicated subject and breaks it down to make it understandable and useful to the "average Joe." She provides great new ways to look at the relationship between metrics over time and company performance. In the process Lora comes up with some real surprises on which companies have been top performers. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is embarking on a transformational supply chain project, as well as anyone who is considering working in the exploding field of supply chain management.

Effectively connects metrics, benchmarks, and organizational objectives

Supply Chain Metrics That Matter (Wiley, 2015) was written by Lora Cecere, founder of Supply Chain Insights and author of the Supply Chain Shaman blog. I am familiar with her work from the many webinars she has spoken on, as well as through the Supply Chain Index developed by her research firm.
Core to Cecere’s firm’s research, the index, and this book is the idea that without the right metrics and the right benchmarks for those metrics, sustained improvement is near impossible. With them, and with the right guidance, anything is possible.

In this particular case, the impossible is made achievable for “Joe”, a fictional supply chain leader based on the many clients and companies Cecere has worked with over the course of her career. At the start of the book, Joe is desperately trying to engage his team at the start of a new year, and he is failing miserably. No one shares his enthusiasm or belief that the target he has set is achievable or meaningful. The Cecere-based character (I assume) is there from the outset, and then she and Joe regularly work together as he designs and executes his strategy for success. Her character serves as the sometimes friend, sometimes mentor, sometimes co-conspirator every corporate leader deserves to have.

The book is written in narrative style, and truly does tell the story of Joe’s transformative efforts. The reader benefits from getting to see all of the charts and case studies Cecere shares with Joe as he overcomes many obstacles on the way to starting an operation in Brazil. The story has a happy ending, and although I won’t share it or the more memorable circumstances of his journey, I will say this – for Joe and any other organization looking to make significant improvements in their supply chain operation, expect and embrace the journey.

A few important ideas that I found particularly memorable include:
• The need to create, benchmark, and work towards metrics without operating in isolation.
• Selecting suppliers that offer both the capabilities and the potential for responsiveness required to meet your needs.
• The challenge (but necessity) of considering the complexity versus clarity of demand signals, especially when outsourcing is involved.
• Data and systems integration is not the same as harmonization or synchronization, and it is important to understand the difference and work with IT on what is needed.

I will conclude by offering a recommendation to buy this book and a final reflection from Joe’s journey:

“As Joe picked up his briefcase to amble down the stairs from the stage, he realized that the journey for operations excellence is about people, working with people, and that the metrics that matter become the glue to align efforts for success.”

A first class series of supply chain Novellas

This is a real home run!!! It is a thick read and it will take you some time to get through it, but it is a tour de force on change management. The author uses the novella approach to provide the reader with methods and techniques and especially process to redo the way they look at how to manage your supply chain by measuring what is important. What interested me personally was the use of what the author refers to as an Orbit technique to examine the interfaces over time of fairly standard financial measures. As an academic I was very interested in how the author came about choosing a fairly narrow set of metrics. 5 stars.
