According to Raybeck, the solitary dictum that best characterizes fieldwork is “Things go awry.” In this spirited account of his time spent in Southeast Asia, Raybeck describes several adventures and misadventures involving field research, as well as the understanding, humility and bruises that these experiences leave behind. Since fieldwork is situated, Raybeck’s treatment also includes rich descriptions of Kelantanese society and culture, addressing such topics as kinship, linguistics, gender relations, economics, and political structures. Through the lively pages of this narrative, readers gain insight into the human dimension of the fieldwork undertaking, a sense of how the anthropologist builds rapport in a research setting, and how reliable information is obtained.

Review
"A colleague recommended this as a good intro-level exploration of the ethnographic fieldwork experience. The author's candid observations and comfortable prose convinced me. I look forward to teaching it this fall." --Doc Billingsley, Washington University
"... an engaging, entertaining, and highly readable introduction to the challenges and joys of doing ethnography. The author uses humor—more often than not, directed at himself—to illustrate important concepts such as using both qualitative and quantitative methods, establishing rapport, participant observation, direct contact with the subject population, and both culture shock and return culture shock." --Margaret Bodemer, California Polytechnic State University

"On my well-used Yamaha I began to explore roads, paths, and trails in search of an appropriate village. Motorcycles are better adapted to villages, with their winding footpaths, than are cars, which are constrained to roads. Motorcycles also allow air to cool the rider, enabling one to forget the equatorial location and to acquire a sunburn of impressive magnitude. I spent a full day in my bed, my badly sunburned arms stretched out to either side, vowing to pay greater attention to the little details of life in the tropics. Things go awry."

Professor Raybeck writes for students
By J. Taransky
I think the highlight of this book is that Professor Raybeck writes in a way that introduces anthropology to students as approachable and interesting. It shows the mistakes that a professonal can (and will) make while in the field. While taking Professor Raybeck's class at Hamilton College, "Mad Dogs" was used as a tool and example in his own teaching, but I feel that this book stands alone and can be used for any intro to anthro class, or for anyone looking for a low-key introduction to anthropological field work.

Great Introduction.... AND funny
By 20-something
The author is a former professor of mine. I would definitely recommend this book as an introductory resource - if you are going to do any kind of fieldwork anywhere (not just Malaysia), read this book! It's not very long and written in plain, easy-to-understand language, yet covers all the areas you should be thinking about before heading off to conquer the world.
Yes, the book is informative, easily readable, BUT, above all, it is funny!! Doug Raybeck is a great writer and if you're at all interested in Anthropology, other cultures, academic research, fieldwork, or are just a geek, who likes to read about other people's pitfalls, BUY THIS BOOK!

I assigned this in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology class
By DB
A colleague recommended this book as an introduction to the basics of anthropological fieldwork for undergraduates. Raybeck did a fantastic job of painting a realistic, honest picture of what the fieldwork experience looks like; although ethnographic fieldwork obviously differs for each anthropologist, the invariable common element is that "things go awry." Raybeck shows the readers how he managed to learn from these unexpected experiences, and how building rapport and becoming part of a community necessarily involves the sorts of decisions that can't possibly be planned in advance. It's not a traditional ethnographic text, so you won't find much theory or even a lot of descriptive data to mine. Describing Kelantan and its residents is not Raybeck's primary purpose here. However, as an introduction to fieldwork it serves wonderfully. It's also extremely well-written and a genuinely enjoyable read. I plan to use it again for future classes, and I will recommend it to graduate students before they head off for their own fieldwork experiences.
