You would think a guide through the ethical thicket that awaits creative nonfiction writers would have clearer answers. But writer and editor Gutkind seems positively Swiss in his neutrality on the simmering issues that flared into open warfare during the James Frey debacle. “Listen, I can’t answer all these questions with rules and regulations,” he tells a college audience in an anecdote from the introduction. “I am not the creative nonfiction police!” Rather than indulging in what he calls “sanctimonious pronouncements about Truth in Art,” Gutkind and his essayists offer a sort of literary realpolitik, providing thoughtful but studiously noncommittal glosses on “checkbook journalism” (paying subjects for information), compression (combining multiple events and/or quotes for the sake of narrative flow), and using family members as characters (tempting but potentially fatal to household harmony). It’s fine as far as it goes, but you sympathize with the woman who stood up after Gutkind’s college declaration and said, “Someone has to be. And you are under arrest.” --Kevin Nance

Lee Gutkind is the founder and editor of the literary journal Creative Nonfiction and a pioneer in the field of narrative nonfiction. Gutkind is also the editor of In Fact and Becoming a Doctor, the author of Almost Human, and has written books about baseball, health care, travel, and technology. A Distinguished Writer in Residence at Arizona State University, he lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Tempe, Arizona.

Who says that non-fiction has to be just the facts and nothing else? "Keep It Real: Everything You Need to Know About Researching and Writing Creative Nonfiction" is a guide for writers who are set to write nonfiction but want to do it with some flare, by taking the concepts of fiction - scene, dialogue, metaphor, suspense, and applies them to reality, as a way of telling the truth in the way it happened. Explaining the genre as a whole, sifting through facts to find the best story, points of view, libel fears, immersion, and so many more concepts are covered, making "Keep It Real: Everything You Need to Know About Researching and Writing Creative Nonfiction" highly recommended for anyone who wants to dive into this field.

Great advice for aspiring creative nonfiction writers

I had read some articles by Gutkind in his journal Creative Nonfiction and was excited to see a book that included some of the most valuable selections from previous issues of the journal. As a writer new to this field, I found the chapters extremely helpful and have already been able to apply some of the concepts (mostly concerning research) to my own writing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is just getting his or her feet wet with this genre, and I think it would also be beneficial as a refresher for those who have been working with this type of writing for some time.

Nuts & Bolts of Creative Nonfiction

This is a book I'm keeping for reference. It's definitely a must for those interested in pursuing creative nonfiction as a writing genre. You'll find interesting material on plagiarism, interviewing technique, and POV. The piece on David Sedaris and the family repercussions of his memoirist writings was fascinating -- and a good lesson for everyone who intends to venture into family-and-friends memoirs. As I said, I'll keep this as a reference, but it's also a very interesting read on its own.

Book is very good starting point for ASIC backend engineers - with good and short introduction and than right on to the target.
However there is no substitute for practice so after reading the book , my advice is to jump start to some simple to medium complex projects.

This is a good intro - like the title says these are the essentials. This is a great overview of methodology, but the real secrets to success in physical design are knowing how to write and debug scripts, especially perl, unix, c-shell.

Pitch Perfect is Perfectly on Point.

I am a culinary and a communications professional with a lot of interview experience. I bought Pitch Perfect because of the author’s experience and background as a producer and a reporter—and the excellent reviews on amazon. In the beginning of the book, he tells the story of how he made the switch from being on TV to coaching people to be more effective communicators (on TV and beyond). And, his first “client” was right. He is great at it! The book feels like an extended one-on-one session. It captures the feel of a meaty working session with all of the tips, techniques and strategies for successful and effective communication laid out in simple and easily digestible terms. Not surprising, my favorite “Pitch Perfect Principle” is The Pasta-Sauce Principle which underscores my favorite cooking adage of ‘less is more.’ McGowen states, “...good communication is a lot like pasta sauce. The more you boil down and reduce a sauce, the more dynamic the flavor.”
Never was a truer principle told, and by connecting it to pasta sauce, it is unforgettable. Buy the book. Read the book. Live the book. It will make all your communication better, not just interviews and presentations.

Great for anyone who needs to communicate orally

This book is great fun and full of excellent advice. As a fairly successful public speaker (when I have had to speak), I must say that McGowan has it right. A lot of the "old" advice from the 1970s, like envisioning your audience in underwear, is ineffective, he says, and makes no sense. McGowan's better advice: There's no substitute for preparation. I loved his recommended ways of steering an inappropriate or ineffective conversation into a better path without insulting the person who went in the wrong direction. His stories about celebrities or near-celebrities who didn't heed his advice are absolutely hilarious. As McGowan says, please don't invent words in your pitch like "thrival," and expect your audience to be thrilled! You will only sound strange.

Great advice, don't pass this one by!

I love this book! Pitch perfect is a great guidebook for anyone who wants to make a good impression in any kind of social situation. The advice offered here can help you whether you're talking to one person or a whole audience.
As a visual artist, presenting has never been my forté, in fact just the idea of being the focus of attention has always been nerve-racking for me. But I found the author's tone, wealth of experience and depth of knowledge so helpful and reassuring that I am actually looking forward to putting his ideas into play.
It's hard to imagine a situation where you wouldn't benefit from the savvy advice offered here. Whether you're presenting an idea, giving a talk, being interviewed or just interacting with others you can gain really useful tips and insights on what to do as well as what not to do, to always make the best impression. As McGowan reminds us "...there are no second takes in real life. That's why it's so important to say it right the first time, every time." How true!
If you're like me and not comfortable being the focus of attention it's wise to call in an expert. Reading this book is like having private practice sessions with a coach who knows the territory like the back of his hand. I appreciate how McGowan points out specific pitfalls to avoid ahead of time, this is where his experience really shines through. There is a good balance of common sense, insider information and humor that had me laughing out loud. You can learn a lot from other's mistakes illustrated throughout the book, McGowan even includes some of his own not so pitch perfect moments which kept his advice from seeming preachy. I felt encouraged throughout the book especially when he shares that "Pitch-Perfect communication is not just vital, it's also something anyone can learn." and he promises to impart everything he knows and has learned from his 30 years in television and 4,000 coaching sessions so the reader can "come away with a thorough yet simple set of principles for deftly handling a wide variety of personal and professional communications scenarios so you can achieve the best of all possible results." Wow, that's a big promise but in my opinion McGowan delivers. I can't wait to share this with my friends. I highly recommend getting the audio version too. I especially enjoyed listening to McGowan's great delivery and conversational style. It feels like he's right there with you! His level of experience and confidence spills out from every page, and I already feel greatly reassured that awkward presentations and unconscious self sabotage are now a thing of the past. Get your highlighters ready, this advice is too good to forget and worth every penny.

There were three famous dystopian novels in the 20th century: "We" by Zamyatin, "Brave New World" by Huxley and "1984" by Orwell. All three were written by authors who were anti-Nazi, anti-Communist and anti-totalitarian, though Orwell favored Socialism. In addition all three were examples of a dead world caused by secular authoritarianism.

Sansal, an Algerian, has the true perspective of a Muslim. He sees the future as a one world Islamic State called "Abistan", that is just as totalitarian, just as much a horror, except in this case the new regime is run by the wacko cult, known as Islam.

The book is a wake-up call to all bien pensant leftists, socialists and lovers of laicite (laicism). You can love your secularism all you want, but religious fanaticism will win every time if the West hates itself as much as it does today.

Can't wait for the English translation. In the meantime Google "2015, The Year the War Began", an article on the West's suicidal stupidity and also a good commentary on this book. Excellent book

I had been working on a 2D RTS game for about 4 months, once I saw this book I was immediately interested. I've been reading the book for about a week now and all I can say is that it was well worth the money. The examples on the CD are excellent. The terrain rendering is done really well, most of my previous experience with books teaches you how to render a terrain and spread on texture over it. Carl Granberg takes this a lot farther by showing how to break the terrain up into subsets so they can be culled. He also shows several techniques using shaders and textures to create really cool looking terrains. The bad thing is that it is going to take me a long time to fully understand everything that is happening. I am so excited about this book that I just can put it down.

I've been making a goal of typing in the code he has and then modifying it in some way so I really understand what is happening. The main thing this book does is it builds a really good foundation for creating a full RTS game. Not to mention the book comes with prebuilt projects for Visual Studio which is something a lot of books leave out. The code is really well organized, and I've found very few errors in it. I have been working on my own framework for my games for a while, and have created several 2D games, but now it is time to incorporate what this book teaches so I can use it to create 3D games of any type. I am really looking forward to the chapter on creating the minimap.

Code needs work

Since most of the code is not included in the printed book which is actually pretty small it would be nice if the code actually compiled on a modern compiler like VS2005.

I didn't see anything in the book that actually mentioned what compiler or DX SDK the authors used to compile the code but it must've been VC 6 or earlier since the first problem with the code is using for loops with a variable that goes out of scope because of newer scope rules in VS2003 or higher.

Second problem is that most of the code is linked with directshow which is no longer included with DirectX SDK.

If the authors at least included some sort of contact information or webpage at least we could have a chance of getting this code to work but I wasn't able to find anything.

Maybe they could reply to this post.

The only reason I'm not giving the book less stars is that is actually concludes with a game demo is that is pretty damn good almost like age of empires 1 quality. And I've never seen a game programming book with a better quality demo and I own almost 100 or more!

Best book ever written on Direct3D

I am a computer science professor who reads scores of game dev and C++ books every year. I have a really hard time choosing a textbook for many upper-division game courses, and rarely have time to read them all. I was really upset when the book initially came out with buggy examples that would not build with VS2005 and would crash a lot, so I had to shelve it for a couple years. Now, returning to the book again while perusing the Amazon reviews, I find that the author, Carl Granberg, released an update of the book's sources with new VS2008 projects and bug fixes, and everything works great now. More than great...

This is the single best book on Direct3D 9 I have ever read, and I am using it as the primary resource for two courses--DirectX II and Game Engine Development. Here are the all-important topics you will learn here that are half baked in every other book I've read:

1. 3D heightmap terrain generation, with a progression from simple to complex with over a dozen examples of each step the author took while developing the landscape for his rts example. THIS ALONE is worth the price of the book! No other resource explains dynamic terrain as well as Granberg does here.

2. Mesh file modeling, loading, rendering, and animating. ALSO worth the price of the book. It's so well done that Granberg is writing another book just on this topic. Character Animation with Direct3D.

3. HLSL shader programming: glow effects, fog of war, team colors. ALSO worth the price of the book. Very good practical real-world use of shaders rather than the usual (Engel, et al) over-hyped approach to the topic. Easy to grasp due to Granberg's excellent pacing and well-described techniques.

In summary, I was a fan of this book even with the buggy problems here and there in his sources. But now that the issues are worked out with the author's updated sources, I'm extremely relieved to have found a MASTER guide to all of the most important Direct3D topics in one volume.
