Excellent book!

This is a fantastic book! A must for any parent!!!! I grew up in a home with incredibly tasty, home cooked meals, however, my sister and I were never aloud in the kitchen. Out of habit, I have continued this practice with my girls. Michelle has inspired me to include my children in the cooking process. It is one of the best ways I can bond with them and inspire them to love to cook. I now see that having them help me in the kitchen will motivate them to try new foods and want to eat what they have helped prepare. I love that the recipes are so easy and kid friendly!

This book should be part of your cookbook collection. Love the fact that it is interactive and simple to follow. I spend a tremendous amount of time with children in the kitchen as part of my daycare and this book will be a true asset to my program. Michelle obviously knows a lot about children - she did a fantastic job - recipes are clear and the illustrations are so cute.

Discovering the Fun & Nutrition in Cooking with Kids
Cooking is not something that I excel at and probably would love to learn more about. When Michelle asked me to review and read her book I grabbed at the chance to try my hand at something I am not very good at. I figure if Jackson can handle the hard stuff so can I! In order to make sure that I followed the exact recipes and figured out where things go and how to really create these delicious dishes I would have to bring in some real help. Where do you start? Of course a the beginning which is understanding what to cook, collecting what you need: Foods, ingredients and utensils of course, preparing the ingredients, safety first making sure that the sharp items are only handled by the adults and finally clean as you go. Next, the author shares the five food groups and the foods that are in these five groups, which help create a healthy diet. Protein: Fiber, Carbohydrates, Fats, vitamins and minerals. A recipe guide with pictures of many of the recipes in color is provided at the author relates that the writing where the steps for Kids would be outlined in a different color and the instructions for adults.
Section one is titled Rise and Shine which means breakfast foods. Starting with Silver Dollar Pancakes with Strawberry Sauce, Jackson’s Breakfast Granola Parfaits and because I am on strict diet to keep my weight down we tried and it is delicious: Fruity Fruit Bowls which has some of my favorite fruits: apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes unsweetened coconut flakes and lemon juice. What more can you ask for? Oh Yeah! The recipe. Well that my dear readers and potential cooks you need to find out for yourself when you conduct your own cooking session and use the recipe on pages 17- 18. You won’t be disappointed. Penelope loved this recipe and she had fun preparing the fruits. Of course nothing like my favorite food mini Turkey Burgers and okay once in a while you can splurge: SWEET POTATO FRIES. My niece loved breaking the ground turkey and putting the ingredients into the bowl and seasoning the potatoes and making sure that there was just enough olive oil. Pizza is everyone’s favorite food and making your own 12-inch pizza can be fun if the right people are creating it. My little niece loved this one because she got to do most of the work. Sprinkling, spreading layers of sauce over the dough and much more.
Veggie soup is great on a cold day and since this month of June is starting off more like a cold spring day veggie soup was just the thing with crispy cheesy circles. Pages 33-34 will explain how to make this delicious and tasty soup. But, let's not forget some kid favorites: panko breaded fish sticks with Honey Dijon Dipping sauce and Yummy beef tacos! Could it get any better? Well! Is does with Sweets and Treats: If you want to try something delicious, healthy and cool any time of the year Mango, Raspberry and Blueberry Frozen Pops are great. For those that love Sweet Potatoes try the Baked Sweet Potato Cakes and for the veggie lover in you: Crunchy Veggie Sticks with Avocado and Spinach Hummus. Finally every kid and big kid’s fun treat: Peanut Butter and Raspberry Jam Bars are great. My niece loved adding the vanilla, eggs and peanut butter to butter and the sugar mix. She really loved spreading the jam evenly over the dough and much more. But, what my dear hungry readers you will have to learn and try for yourself when you read the scrumptious recipe on pages 49-50. So, get your utensils and ingredients ready and choose a recipe or more to try and join Jackson and Michelle in the kitchen and bake, sift, spread, toss, mix and more galore! The pictures alone will make you want to try the recipes and the fun you will have with a young child even more. What better way to teach a child to enjoy cooking than to do it together and learn teamwork, how to measure for math skills, reading skills and the importance of eating healthy.
