Yogesh Chavan

Yogesh Chavan is a Linux enthusiast and open source promoter, living in Pune, India. He has now been teaching operating systems, device drivers, and embedded systems in colleges and institutes for more than three years. These include the computer science department of Pune University, Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR) college, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) institute. He has about six years of experience in the software industry. His previous industrial role was of a software maintenance engineer at Red Hat Software Services. Yogesh has overseen many engineering projects under GEEP (http://www.geeksofpune.in). He has given many talks at the annual open source event, GNUnify (http://gnunify.in). Lots of solid but disconnected information

The book covers quite a fair bit of topics on the BeagleBone series (all three versions). I have a lot of experience using Arduino's and Raspberry Pi's and was hoping this book would enable me to quickly get my skills up to par with those platforms. Unfortunately the coverage is pretty much disconnected and there isn't a lot of discussion on practical application of the topics covered. Additionally I may be overly sensitive because I read so many books but I found most of the phrasing used for the sentences very odd. This caused me to frequently need to re-read sentences to make sure I understood them. This was really distracting and ended up detracting from the enjoyment of the book. On the positive side there are some notably good sections. I really found the coverage of the UART, SPI, and I2C protocols helpful. Overall I found some value from the book but it fell short of my hopes.

First, you will learn to use BeagleBone as tool to write useful applications on embedded systems. Starting with the basics needed to set up BeagleBone and the Cloud9 IDE, this book covers interfacing with various electronics components via simple programs. The electronics theory related to these components is then explained in depth before you use them in a program. Finally, the book helps you create some real-life IoT applications.

BeagleBone uncovered...

Don't expect to buy this book and just go over it once, you'll be reading it a few times to fully understand all the material, or at least I did. I liked how the book was broken down into two sections which encompassed the overall areas of development for creating IoT technology and that was what I wanted to see in action, I wasn't disappointed.

The entry for each game lists the publisher, developer, possible number of players, and year of publication. Sound, graphics, and levels of play are briefly described, and the author--an experienced collector and gamer--provides his well-educated opinion on the quality of play. Arcade games and other systems for which the game was also ported are listed. A glossary and index provide further information. For as far as it goes, this reference is professionally executed and an obvious labor of love.

A good starting point but not definitive

Ten or fifteen years ago, before everything went online, this would have been a 4 or 5 star book. Sadly, it just doesn't stand up to the vast wealth of information on the internet, which for free, is infinitely cheaper.

The author lays out the book in three sections, the Atari 7200, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and the Sega Master system. He gives a brief history of the system, highlights the peripherals, and lists all the games in alphabetical order to include year released, publisher, etc. That's great. That's where the positives stop. All pictures are in black and white which would have been OK for a book from when the games were released but seems dated in a book released in 2012. The summary of the games is usally less informative than the Wikipedia entries. Most games get one paragraph. A few games are referred to as "rare" which no context to just how rare, and many games that I would easily classify as rare make no mention of limited press runs.

I don't want to make it sound like the book is worthless though. First of all, if you are reading the book, you obviously enjoy retro games, so you probably don't want everything all digital and online any way. Second, it is a handy reference for the basics, and some of you probably have the first volume of the series ([...]) so might as well go all Pokemon and collect them all.

Still, there is plenty of room for improvements. First, a screenshot from most, if not all of the games. Come on! Also, the cover art, or at least, cartridge art is a good start. Second, this book is aimed at collectors, so give them what they are looking for. The entry for the NES' Action 51 just says it's a crappy game. With that knowledge, you would not pick up a copy for $2 at a yard sale, and then you'd be a complete idiot as the game frequently sells for ~$100 in good condition. Third, a full-page article on some of the pinnacle games that defined the system and discuss their lasting legacies would be good.

A decent book, but the simple ways it could have been better make it a tad frustrating for me.

Informative, fun and easy to read

For anyone that is interested in the Nintendo NES, Atari 7800 and Sega Master System this book is well worth purchasing. This guide does a good job of providing a quick and informative overview of all US licensed games for each system. Considering that there are over 700 games for the Nintendo NES alone, a guide like this helps the potential gamer to home in on games that fit their taste. That way you can only purchase games that you might enjoy.

Overall the book is an interesting read and I doubt that anyone who plays video games wouldn't find it interesting.

Must own book for classic video game collectors.

Just like this book's companion, this book is a must own for any gamer out there. It is laid out extremely well and gives a nice description of each game that is spot on. I loved reading about all the different games for each system. I was surprised to see how many games the author and I agree on. I can spend hours going over each system and all the games for them. It is a great book that will help you build a better collection. Highly recommended, I love both books and plan on getting the third in the series.

Excellent entertainment mixed with insights

Best listen to a few episodes of their podcast first as full enjoyment requires hearing the words in their voice. Likely, you are a fan. Thus, you will know much of the contents of this book. I did. But it is a great pleasure to add more depth and the presentation is well written, funny, and insightful. Well worth it.

Some of the chapters stand on their own merits, outside of the context of the ramble. And you'll hear each chapter in your head in the voice of the particular rambler. 84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. This is a terrible edition

This is a terrible edition. I opened the book up to see that "a very bad cess" in the April 10, 1950 letter had been changed to "a very bad success." A bad cess is an Irish curse. I wanted this book for a gift but I'll just be putting it in the Good Will bag.

beautiful book, but be wary of which edition you get

This is a quick, amazing read about a writer and her favorite English bookshop. But make sure you get an older edition, like maybe the 1990 Penguin paperback.

Somehow I ended up with a version that Amazon said was 2013 from Important Books (the copy I actually received says 2014 Stellar Books). This edition has a cheap, sloppy feel. The formatting is awful, there are text errors, and the cover is an overly enlarged version of the image file from Wikipedia's 84, Charing Cross Road page. Seriously. It even has the same small, brown stain in the artwork.

Please, please do yourself a favor and find a professionally printed version of this great book.

Mail-order romance before "You've Got Mail"

What's not to love about this book? Easy to read, no complicated, or stage-crafted, Hollywood infused drama. This is a lovely story (and trust me - I'm a man that NEVER uses the word "lovely" to describe things) about a woman from the Bronx and her transatlantic dalliance with a staid London bookseller. The story is told over changing decades from the aftermath of WWII to the late 70's. Helene Hanff is both the author and subject of this book. The book's title refers to the bookstore's address in London. The story is about her life as a script reader, her love for rare and out of print books, and the bookseller (Frank Doel)who goes to great lengths to find those books for her. Her ability to write about daily events makes you see and feel the changes that are occurring in America while Europe struggles to rebuild. Before "You've Got Mail", "When Harry Met Sally", or even "The Notebook" - people would sometimes meet as penpals and could be charmed by one another's kindnesses. There are no flashes of nudity here, no sordid details of extramarital affairs (Frank is married, with children). Instead, you'll find two people who become friends through the mail and still respect one another in the morning. A great read!
