Wolves in the Woods

Rarely does money fall from the sky. But on dark and stormy afternoon Frank and Joe Hardy were caught outside Barmet Bay when the engine of the Sleuth died. The violence of the ocean prevented making any attempt at repairs. The boys spot a yacht, but are unable to make contact with it. Soon the boys hear a helicopter, and then a siren. The boys are able to glimpse the yacht and the helicopter for brief moments, but are unable to gain the attention of either. As the helicopter passes overhead a wallet full of money drops into the water next to the Sleuth, and the boys are plunged into another mystery.

Soon thereafter the Hardy boys' best friend Chet Morton has a truck with a shipment of high power rifles and camping equipment stolen while he is eating at a roadside restaurant; leaving the keys in the truck may have had something to do with the theft. The trail leads to the North Woods, where wild dogs have been reported to roam.

The mystery grows when Frank Hardy is kidnapped. Frank and Joe have stumbled into some kind of mystery, but they are unable to understand the nature of the mystery. Frank escapes by himself and halts payment of ransom just in time.

Soon, Fenton Hardy reveals that he is involved in investigating the theft of United States currency in Central and South America. Later, we learn that the money is being used to fund terrorists and to purchase arms for them.

All trails seem to lead to the North Woods, where Frank and Joe Hardy and their friends encounter a man raising wolves, including Saber, a killer wolf. The stakes are high as the brothers and their friends face death numerous times.

There are a couple of problems with this story that I found distracting. First, healthy wolves do not attack and kill people. In spite of numerous studies that confirm this observation, people persist in portraying wolves as people killers. Second, the criminals' preoccupation with $2,000 seems bizarre. The criminals have a yacht, a helicopter, and numerous henchmen. It seems strange that any criminal organization would be overly concerned with a mere $2,000.

Other than these two annoyances, this adventure is exciting and interesting. The teaser promised that this book would be one of the Hardy boys' most exciting adventures, and it appears that the book has fulfilled that promise.

The Hardy Boys series is recommended for ages 8 to 12 because the series is relatively tame for the previous target audience of ages 10 to 14. However, this book in the series contains many interesting moments and will keep most readers guessing the answers to the mysteries until the author reveals the final solution.

Full of Adventure

Originally published in 1951, the biggest flaw with this volume was the absolutely horrible cover art drawn by Bill Gillies in 1951. Nappi's 1968 revision was a vast improvement on the original cover and fishing trawler of a Sleuth portrayed on the front cover. The book itself opens with a bang as the Hardys find a wallet full of money while out in Barmet Bay during a storm. Personally I now think the Sleuth has a voodoo doll that has been hanging beneath somebody's shower head as everytime it seems they take out that boat it rains!! This is a well written suspenseful adventure that takes place for the most part in the "North Woods" near Bayport. Very delightful reading throughout the entire book until perhaps the final chapter which tended to lack creativity. I was somewhat let down with Chapter 25. But the first 24 were excellent. This was in fact one of my more favorite volumes. RATED A-

Another Great Book

This review concerns the original 1951 edition. Frank and Joe are plunged into another mystery when they are out in the Sleuth during a storm and they find a wallet full of money and when they track down some rifles and camping equipment stolen from Chet to the North Woods. This book has one of the best opening chapters of any in the series and it gets you into the mystery very quickly. The pages from about 60-130 when the Hardys and their friends go camping in the North Woods are the best, but the whole book is really good. One thing I liked about this book was that it actually remembered that Frank and Joe have other friends besides Chet and they were given more than just a passing mention. It's a great book any Hardy Boys fan would want to read.

Gr 5 Up-Will Hobbs' exciting adventure tale with historical roots in the 1800s Alaskan Gold Rush (HarperCollins, 2001) is a sequel to Jason's Gold (Morrow, 2001). After much of Dawson City is destroyed by fire, Jason Hawthorn's brothers lose their sawmill to a swindler named Donner. Jason, now 16, and Jamie, his girlfriend, decide to enter a perilous race to Nome in a canoe for a $20,000 prize which they plan to use to recapture the mill. There are 300 entrants, and their major opponent turns out to be Donner who sabotages their canoe. The race is very suspenseful with river travel, destruction of their canoe, grizzly bears, kayaking in the open ocean, a secret shortcut overland, and a shortage of food. An appended note from the author at the end of the story details which parts of the story are historically accurate. Actor Boyd Gaines' steady, but interesting voice contributes to the excitement of the novel. He uses slight voice variations to help listeners keep the characters straight. This suspenseful tale will hold the attention of listeners until the very end.

With him in the contest are Jamie, the plucky young lady who appeared in Jason's Gold, and a mongrel dog, Burnt Paw. As if river travel, grizzly bears, a kayak journey across open sea, and a budding romance aren't enough, Jason and Jamie must also deal with ruthless Donner, their main competition in the race. The ending, though predictable, features an appropriate twist. Hobbs includes an epilogue about Jason and Jamie, notes on the historical basis for some of story's characters and events, and a map. Jason's brother Ethan loses the family mill in a poker bet. Jason and his friend Jamie decided they need to enter the Great race to get the mill back. First prize in the race is twenty-thousand dollars. Donner, the man Ethan lose the bet to, said he would sell the mill back too him for three thousand dollars. After days on the Yukon Jason and Jamie get their canoe stuck on a log. After hours of hard work they get it unstuck. Jason and Jamie make up the time by paddling hard. Jason and Jamie see that another family has gotton stuck and decided to help them. They leave there boat on a near by island. After helping the family, Jason and JAmie return to find that Donner, who is also in the race, has chopped down a and it has crusted there boat. Now they have to build a boat. Will they make it in time? Will they win back the mill? To find out read Down The Yukon by Will Hobbs.

A Nice Ride...

Beginning in the city of Dawson in the Yukon, Jason and his dreamgirl, Jamie, paddle a canoe in a race to Nome against hundreds of others! The time is the gold rush at the turn of the 1900s in the Yukon territory. The setting is colorful, with nods to the gambling, drinking, and dancing that took place during the time. Names from the old west, such as Wyatt Earp and Calamity Jane appear in the tale that gives a good sketch of what was taking place at the time.
The story begins well with a confrontation between the brothers and the Sydney Mauler and carries along well, but it did not seem believable. When Jamie and Jason venture to race together, I wondered how a teenage boy and girl travelling together would have been perceived and was somewhat disappointed that this aspect was ignored. Though Down the Yukon is the sequel to Jason's Gold, it most defnitely stands on its own as a story, and for that Will Hobbs is to be commended... I look forward to reading more of his work.

An exciting and Fun Book

Down Yhe Yukon, was a very good book it had many exciting and interesting parts. I thought it had some very dull or boring parts to it though. It takes place after the gold rush in alaska with Jason Hawthorn, Jamie Dunavant, and A dog named Burnt Paw. Dawson City just burtn down and Jason lost his job and goes to join a race up the Yukon River to get his company back. He is in the race with Jamie the girl he loves and his dog Burnt Paw who saved from an famous boxer. While this race they go through many difficult and rough times.Its up to whether to see if wins the race now.

Excellent Book

I expected to learn from this book, but didn't expect to be inspired and I was. It is very readable, concise, and well thought out. It grabbed my attention from the first page and kept me interested through the entire book.
Even though the format was question and answer, it was surprising how the personality of each responder came through. (An example: While I appreciate and agree with Dr. Bryan Dik about his explanation of "calling" I found his speaking style to be a bit academic in tone).
It was excellent that the book speaks to all ages from high school age to mid-life folks. There were helpful suggestions for people from every age bracket. I appreciated the fact that much was said to parents about how to support their kids. Wish I had known all that earlier.
The LGBT section was excellent and should be of great help to members of that group seeking a career. Lynne Milburn fully realizes the difficulties LGBT people face and gave helpful information to them.
I wish I had had this book both when I was working and even earlier. I was "lucky" in my profession and loved what I did but always felt that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. There is not much in the book to address gender issues. I think I am especially aware of these issues because of my age and the experiences I had. I was the "first woman" to do many things in my field. I know that there is much less discrimination in the work place now than when I began my professional life, but I also believe it still is an underlying issue in many situations.

Overall, great book and one I am buying for a family member who could benefit from it.

Definitely Recommend!

If you only buy one book about careers, you should buy this one. Dr. Civitelli has done a phenomenal job taking the best, most pertinent career information you need and combining it into one amazing resource. This book is incredibly well-written, organized, and edited. I was surprised and pleased to see a Kindle book so well formatted. I have bought other Kindle books in the past that I couldn't even read because the author did not take the amount of time needed to get it right, like Dr. Civitelli obviously did. I like that she chose to interview multiple industry professionals for many viewpoints, rather than filling the book with her own, like many other career professionals. I am impressed with the thoroughness of her research and the types of questions she asked. I will be recommending this book to clients, family members, and friends.

Aside from sleep, most people spend the majority of their lives at work. Considering the amount of time that we spend at work, it is worth the time, energy, and dedication to research and find a satisfying and fulfilling career. Dr. Civitelli's "Help Me Find a Career: Strategies to Choose Work You Will Love" is a helpful and comforting resource for someone looking to find and/or change his/her career. The interviews provide insightful advice, direction, and optimism. I particularly appreciate the references about how to find a satisfying career in a gloomy economy. Furthermore, the interviews are relatable and easy to apply in real life. I highly recommend anyone exploring his/her career options to read this book.

WORST BOOK EVER!!

You have got to be kidding me!! Amazon actually let's people make money selling this crap. I'm not exaggerating. This is the worst book I've ever read about making money. I have little doubt that the person making money from selling this worthless book hired or paid for the people to leave their 5 STAR reviews. This book gives no concrete analysis or problem solving to anything, other than to say, "you might want to sell a product that a lot of people want". NO KIDDING! Who's the mental midget that thought this could be the key to making money? Chapter 1 is literally 6 short PARAGRAPHS. It says it's a "#1 Best Seller". Where? On an island inhabited by two people? Here's the word for word CONCLUSION written on page 38 (I had to number the pages myself)
"Creating a successful online business is not so easy. You are required to face and overcome many challenges that may hinder your sales process and bring down your sales and profit. The conclusion addresses true issues, the author never gives any inclination of how to overcome any of the issues. If you need something to read for your daily constitutional go ahead and buy the book cause at least you'll have something to wipe with.

There really isn't much here and what is here is unlikely to make you six figures in six months unless you have your own creativity that makes it possible anyway and then you would've been successful anyway without reading this book.

Only Good if you have not read any other "Internet Income" books

The information in this book is fine if you have not read any other "making money online" books, as it gives a number of ways to use the internet to prosper. However, I was disappointed in it since it seemed like a rehash of everything else I have already read. Also, the author has very poor language skills and it was very distracting and annoying to be forced to read such stilted English.
