Experiential Theology

Theology without history is filled with dead-ends and misunderstanding. I have used Martos' as basic text in teaching sacramental theology for nearly 3 decades.

The Grabbing Hand: Government Pathologies and Their Cures, by Andrei Shleifer, Robert W. Vishny

In many countries, public sector institutions impose heavy burdens on economic life: heavy and arbitrary taxes retard investment, regulations enrich corrupt bureaucrats, state firms consume national wealth, and the most talented people turn to rent-seeking rather than productive activities. As a consequence of such predatory policies--described in this book as the grabbing hand of the state--entrepreneurship lingers and economies stagnate.

The authors of this collection of essays describe many of these pathologies of a grabbing hand government, and examine their consequences for growth. The essays share a common viewpoint that political control of economic life is central to the many government failures that we observe. Fortunately, a correct diagnosis suggests the cures, including the best strategies of fighting corruption, privatization of state firms, and institutional building in the former socialist economies. Depoliticization of economic life emerges as the crucial theme of the appropriate reforms. The book describes the experiences with the grabbing hand government and its reform in medieval Europe, developing countries, transition economies, as well as today's United States.

Review
[The Grabbing Hand's] range of materials is impressive: the chapters deal with the growth of European cities before the industrial revolution, corruption in post-Soviet Russia, privatisation in Eastern Europe, local government in the United States, and more. The authors keep technical apparatus to a minimum. By any standard, let alone the debased standard of most modern economics, the essays are lucid and literate. (The Economist)

Is France Corrupt?
By Etienne RP
When looking for a corrupt country, Andrei Shleifer and his coauthors have one example ready at hand: France. To be precise, most of Shleifer's academic interest and government consulting work concentrates on Russia, the country he left at a young age for the United States, and he has many examples of bad governance and predatory policies coming from both the Soviet past and the more recent era of reforms. But he keeps coming back to France as proof that the universe of countries to draw on for examples of bureaucratic red tape and corruption is not limited to developing countries and transition economies.

This is weird. France does not rank that bad in corruption indexes and governance rankings (there is also something to be said against the biases in those measurements: the Doing Business index and Polity IV database are good cases in point). The image of France as a corrupt and treacherous country is mostly limited to the anglo-saxon world; elsewhere, especially in countries that adopted the French legal and administrative system, France is recognized as a model of efficient civil service and rigorous public management. Its laws and regulations provide the predictability and precision that business crave for, and cases of red tape or corruption are the exception rather than the rule.

Indeed, I wonder if the France that Shleifer and his coauthors describe is really the country where I grew up. I do remember for instance that there once was a waiting list for getting a new telephone line, but were the delays used by public officials in order to extract bribes from the public, as is alleged by Shleifer? If queues and shortages are deliberately put in place by bureaucrats in order to invite illegal payments from rationed consumers, can one conclude that waiting lists to put one's toddler in a municipal day-care center or to benefit from subsidized social housing can be cut short by paying bribes? Or to mention another example with which the book opens, the Credit Lyonnais' infamous debacle was indeed a major financial and political disaster, but what makes this case different from other banking bailouts throughout the world? What makes France's corruption so special, except perhaps the pretense of some French nationals to always occupy the moral high ground?

Shleifer's vision of France as a corrupt country extends to its history. Again, this is not the official story I learned from history books. Can one explain the relative decline of French cities after the 17th century by Bourbon absolutism (not many French are familiar with the argument, although it was first made by Montesquieu)? Was the French chemist Lavoisier a corrupt official because he worked as a tax farmer for the Ancien Regime (the revolutionaries, who beheaded him in 1794, seemed to agree)? Were the many tolls that once slowed traffic on the Seine river comparable to roadblocks in Zaire (their absence in England and presence in France could be interpreted as two different ways of funding a public good)? Or to move to a more recent past, were Gaullist governments inclined to privatize public utilities and other state companies because they could not reap political benefits from state firms dominated by socialist unions?

The paradox is that the statistical tests that Shleifer runs to prove his general arguments often posit France as an exception to the rule. The civil law tradition, for instance, seems to be associated with more corruption in all the countries where the Napoleonic code was exported, except in France. The brightest students in France choose to study engineering instead of law or other disciplines associated with rent-seeking, contrary to the misallocation of talent observed elsewhere. The government which privatized the greatest number of state companies was run by a Socialist, not by Gaullist conservatives. And only in the case of France did a shift to an absolutist regime in the seventeenth century fail to be followed by slower city growth relative to the European average.

It is true that I am focussing only on a minor aspect of this book, which doesn't address France as such but rather focusses on the Russian case of economic liberalization and political transition. My personal wish is that Shleifer would leave cliches aside and apply his brilliant mind to some of the social ills that France faces, such as the lack of social capital, the low level of civic behavior, distrust toward the state, political polarization and entrenchment of vested interests that seem to characterize modern France. There are indeed many problems in France, but corruption of public officials is not one of them.

Unique and compelling theories of government pathologies
By Tennis Bum
I bought The Grabbing Hand because I was interested in reading more by Andre Shleifer after I read another of his books on financial market inefficiency. I enjoyed that book and felt that Shleifer's work worthy of his Clark medal -- he couples great theoretical arguments with empirical support. This book, The Grabbing Hand, is a series of articles Shleifer wrote with Robert Vishny and others (including Kevin Murphy another Clark medal winner).

The book attempts to offer an alternative view of government. They add a third view to the already common "helping hand" view which argues that government works to make the economy better and the "invisible hand" view which argues for only a minimal government. Here they use the public policy argument that government acts in its own self-interest. The first article is an examination of cities in Europe prior to the 19th-century to observe the effects of oppressive government's. One of the most interesting articles is a new explanation of why socialist governments tend to have shortages. The authors argue the shortages result from government's attempts to extract bribes from individuals looking to obtain those limited goods. This explanation explains why, when socialist governments have raised prices, it has not eased the shortage as a conventional supply and demand with a fixed-price argument would conclude. Though this new argument is a little more sinister, it is clever and compelling.

Another insightful article is on the conversion of Russia to a more market economy. This article is especially eye-opening if you've read Stiglitz's Global book. Stiglitz argues that Russia's problem was going too fast in their conversion and the government not doing enough economic stabilization. Shleifer and Vishny argue that this is not the case and then present some interesting data on corruption to support alternative explanation. Where Stiglitz makes simple broad generalizations with little support, Shleifer and Vishny dig into the details and find data to support their position.

Some articles are less compelling. For example, they attempt to explain why some local governments contract out services to private contractors instead of using in-house governmental services. Though they find many interesting statistically significant results, the explanatory power of their findings is usually very weak (usually under 10%).

One complaint is the subtitle of the book which suggests that they will explain cures for the examined government pathologies. Though some cures are suggested it certainly isn't a major feature of the book. After all, many of the results are the result of politics, and it is unlikely politics is going away.

I highly recommend the book for some unique and insightful theories on government pathologies. Be warned: the book is not an introductory book to economic analysis of government. Nor is it comprehensive in examining theories of government pathologies. That is not the intention of the book. The book, instead, is made up of articles that attempt to add to the body of work on analysis of government. The articles are written for other economists. Though I think good upper division econ students can take something away from the book, the book is not for the novice.

About the Author

Robert Clouse directed Bruce Lee's most famous film, Enter the Dragon. During the making of this film, he became close personal friends with Bruce.

My direct contact with Bruce Lee occurred between November 1972 and June 1973 when I started preproduction of the film Enter the Dragion and through the post-production period when Bruce came to the Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank, Calif., to complete some dubbig of dialogue that had been poorly recorded in Hong Kong. Many of the people I interviewed for this book I had known from that time, but many others I met for the first time during research of the elusive Bruce Lee. My perceptions of Bruce were dented and bent from what I knew about him; others were destroyed. Piecing together the portrait is imprecise, but the attempt goes on.

Excellent biography
By a reviewer
This is a very good biography. Most of the other books regarding Bruce's life are more into his films and don't get into much more than that. This book has very detailed accounts of his life. There is some great stuff in here about how Bruce and his Chinese friends would goad the English boys into fights when he was young (to test their skills). Also he staged all kinds of practical jokes on people! He had a great sense of humor! I was very happy to read about his trips to India (attempting to film The Silent Flute). Absolutely great stuff in here. Some very touching stories in here, too. He attempted to marry a Japanese girl several times, but it didnt' work out. She wasn't interested in marrying him. There is some very good stuff in here. They have some great pictures in here, too, but sometimes they spread them over two pages where it doesn't make sense to do that because the spine of the book is over his head or something, so I wish they would have done a better job laying out the pictures. I also would have liked to see the book in color, and I don't know why they put an artists drawing of him on the cover when there are so many excellent actual pictures of him. But that's ok the material here is very good.

Worse biography of anyone ever
By S. McDuffie
Is Robert Clouse capable of writing above the 8th grade level? After reading "The Making of Enter the Dragon" and then the first two-thirds of this one (I couldn't take anymore) I have my doubts.
He isn't a bad director. He IS a bad writer, unless he is a master sandbagger.
I have been a Bruce Lee fan for more than 20 years so I naturally thought I would love this book. I didn't. It was one of the few books that I was unable to finish. After 125 pages, I just couldn't bear to have my intelligence insulted any longer. Neither will you.
Buy this for your 12 year old nephew who watches Kung Fu theatre and who takes Tae Kwon Do lessons at the YMCA. He will love it.

Good pictorial biography
By Chester Beeput
This book presents an excellent pictorial biography of Bruce Lee. It lacks detailed information on his life but compensates for this by presenting excellent pictures of Bruce in his daily life and in his screen endeavours.

Review
"In the fifteen years I've known DeVon, he's lived his life the same way he makes his movies: with commitment, humility, and a work ethic that demands respect. I'm honored to have been a part of his journey from stellar intern to studio vice president--his story is one to be shared with anyone chasing a dream."--Will Smith

"DeVon Franklin is a remarkable man of infectious enthusiasm and a sterling example that one can navigate through the complexities of life, even the verisimilitude of Hollywood, with clarity, purpose, and integrity."--Angela Bassett

"Holding on to one's faith while pursuing a dream, especially in the entertainment business, is no small feat. DeVon demonstrates this possibility beautifully and without compromise. The themes of DeVon's book are great examples of how to pursue any career, not just within the movie business, and stay true to God."--Tyler Perry

"After reading DeVon Franklin's book, "Produced by Faith", I thought it would have been a great guide for my early life, but it's never too late for a book like this. "Produced by" Faith is a wonderful gift from an insightful, inspiring man."--Antwone Fisher

"It takes faith to step out from obscurity into the glaring lights of Hollywood particularly as a man of faith. Not only does DeVon Franklin detail his astonishing ascension to the top of his craft, he shares how he did it to the glory of God and to the delight of blockbuster audiences around the globe. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to strike that quintessential balance between faith and function. Hollywood, like life, is a walk of faith."--Bishop T. D. Jakes

"His book is designed to show readers how to honor their faith and still succeed in their careers. Franklin is doing just that in Hollywood."--Mike Fleming, Deadline Hollywood

PREFACE

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
—Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV

I was deep in the heart of Beijing, People’s Republic of China, in the summer of 2009. For the first time in my career, I was the lead studio executive on a feature film—the remake of The Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, son of actor Will Smith.

It’s important to understand that Beijing—the ancient capital of China—is huge. The urban area alone contains about 13 million residents; that’s four cities of Los Angeles. Beijing is also complex on a Byzantine scale, and with the producers, entire crew, and cast there, we had ventured far into some of the oldest parts of the city, into ancient neighborhoods called hutongs where the living style was more communal and we could find the character and feel we were looking for.

Getting cast, crew, and equipment there was a major undertaking, the shots were taking a long, long time to set up and complete, and as I stood there, we were running out of daylight.

Sunset is usually panic time for a film crew. Unless you’re shooting night scenes, you try to work in every last shot you can, using reflectors to capture every last bit of natural light. The crew was working as quickly as they could to maximize what was a very expensive day of production. But I had other concerns. I glanced at my watch, shot a look at the disappearing sun, and knew that even though I was the sole representative for Columbia Pictures on set, I had to leave.

I had no choice. That is, I didn’t give myself a choice.

Fortunately, the producers knew that I would be making my way back to the hotel. It wasn’t a surprise to anybody. I pulled one of the production assistants aside, told him I would be catching a taxi, left the production in the capable hands of the producers and director, and disappeared into the streets of Beijing. It was an act that might have been ridiculed if I hadn’t set a precedent years before and remained committed to it. Leaving set on the first movie you’re running—shooting halfway around the world—isn’t advisable if you want a long prosperous career in Hollywood.

But I didn’t lose my job.

In fact, my departure didn’t make a ripple in the day’s shoot. I was able to attend to something infinitely more important: keeping a promise to God that I made many years before.

I was born thirty-two years ago and raised as a Seventh-day Adventist. Among other things, that means I celebrate the Sabbath. So from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday, I unplug from my hectic life as a Columbia film executive. No work. I don’t check e-mail or roll calls. I break the fourth commandment of the movie business—Thou shalt never turn off thy BlackBerry—and turn off my BlackBerry.

The Sabbath is my time with the Lord, my time to unwind from the pressures of work, heal, and reflect on the many blessings in my life and the career path that has led me here. On Friday nights I study my Bible, pray, spend quiet hours in communion with God, and make plans with family for church and fellowship on Saturday.

Unless I happen to be in Beijing. In that case, I’ll read Scripture, watch the incredible metropolis slowly come to life, and pray that the dailies look good. Normally I would go to church, but in China most of the Christian churches are underground and I had no idea how to go about finding them. So I settled for reading the Bible and spending time in private communion with God—my own personal church in the midst of one of the world’s busiest cities.

The next morning, I decided that didn’t want to spend the entire Sabbath in my hotel room. I ended up going to a park right outside the Olympic Village where I could sit under God’s sky, watch the birds, listen to gospel music, and read the Word. As I was going through Romans, the idea came to me for this book. Just like that, clear as day.

* * *

YOU MAY FIND IT impossible that a Hollywood studio executive is also a devout Christian. But it’s not a contradiction. In reality, my business is not very different from your own. There are opportunities, politics, unspoken expectations, and a set of rules for advancement that are very different from the Lord’s rules. No matter what line of work you find yourself in, you may feel that being a Christian is holding you back. You may feel caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, if you don’t toe the company line and put your career first, can you still call yourself a company man or woman? On the other, if you ignore the Word and set aside the precepts of your faith when it’s convenient, can you still call yourself a Christian? Sometimes, it feels like we’re walking on a tightrope and below us there’s no net, just a big, dark abyss.

I’ve got great news. I’ve found that it is possible to put Christ first and have a thriving career. In fact, I believe it’s necessary. My favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” God is our strength; his love, demonstrated through us, can move mountains and change hearts. Being a Christian is actually a competitive edge… provided that you place your faith first above even your professional aspirations. Even if in the past you’ve compromised and slid partway down that slippery slope, it’s still possible to find your way back. If I have learned anything, it’s this:

To get where you want to go, you first have
to become the person God wants you to be.

I know writing this book is definitely part of my journey to become who God wants me to be. Some would probably say I’m crazy. The common practice when you’re in business is that you write a book after you’ve either reached your goal and accumulated some power and prominence or left your industry altogether. I’m in neither place. I’m just like most of the people reading this book: still climbing the corporate ladder and/or right in the middle of my career pursuit. Yet I believe God has called me right now to share my unique experiences and this urgent message with you, so I must be obedient to his will.

The message? During my time in the film industry, I have put my faith front and center for everyone to see. It’s my experience that people handle the intersection of faith and career in one of two ways. Some conceal their beliefs at the workplace, dumping their Christian principles on the kitchen table like a spare set of keys when they leave the house in the morning. Others refuse the command to be “in the world but not of the world” and work only in environments run by and for other Christians.

Both approaches are problematic. If we lock our faith in the closet from nine to five because we’re afraid of ridicule or questions about our loyalty, what governs our choices in climbing the career ladder? Will we lie, cheat others, or stab people in the back, then go home at the end of the day and put on our “I’m a Christian” clothes again? Plenty of people do exactly that because they fear that if they go public with their faith at work, they will be perceived as weak, divisive, or unwilling to do whatever it takes to succeed. But if we make such a choice, what does that say about our faith?

On the other hand, as believers we sometimes shun the secular world and limit our job prospects to a select group of potential employers or industries that we believe will be Christian friendly. But by doing so, we can lock ourselves in an echo chamber of ideas and beliefs just like our own, so we never really stretch or grow. Sometimes, we come to regard the world outside our bubble as the enemy.

When some Christians learn that I’ve worked in entertainment for over ten years, I can feel them take a mental step backward, as if they feel I’m sleeping with the enemy. I’m not offended; to many Christians, Hollywood is a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah. This business is probably the last place most people expect to find a young Christian visibly and vocally expressing his faith while progressing in his career. But the truth is that not only has relying on my faith not harmed my career prospects, it has actually enhanced them.

Thrilling opportunities to work with the most dynamic people in the world have come my way precisely because I have been uncompromising about my Christian principles and making service to God the centerpiece of my work. Over the course of my career I have developed a set of guiding principles that I live by:
Note

  • God’s will has priority over mine.

  • Commit to the process of success that God has planned for me, no matter how long it takes.

  • God has the authority to put my ambition in check.

  • Strive to let the love of Christ be apparent in everything I do.

  • Do not allow sin to reside in any area of my life. If I allow it, I understand it will limit my ability to receive God’s full blessings.

  • Do everything in my power to bring God’s purpose for my life to fruition (faith without works is dead).

  • Don’t take shortcuts; if I want to be true to my beliefs, then shortcuts do not exist.

  • Remember on the down days to never give up on myself and the dreams God has given me.

I base every career decision, big and small, on these precepts. That’s not an easy thing to do. There is a lot of temptation in every business from finance to academia to take the quick and easy path to success—to violate our values for promotion or because no one will ever know. I’ve felt pressure on numerous occasions to abandon my commitment to Christ, but then I remember the words of Jesus when he asked, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?”

I can truly say there is nothing in this world worth giving up what I believe in.

I’m amazed at the number of people of all faiths I’ve met who don’t understand that their faith is not an obstacle to fulfilling their dreams but the path to them. They don’t understand the power that a total commitment to God grants them.

I spent a great deal of time not long ago with a young aspiring actor who talked about his career struggles: going to auditions, trying to get in to see casting directors, exhausting himself, not knowing what to do, going to church to try to hook up with this or that individual. I listened for a while and then said, “Where do you think God is in all of this? Have you prayed and looked for where he is leading you in your aspiration?”

He hadn’t.

He was a Christian, but it never occurred to him that God had a place in his career pursuits.

I know from many of my own experiences that if you put your career in God’s hands and trust him, you can’t account for all the ways he will bless you. But you have to take that leap of faith, and even if you consider yourself a believer, that can be the hardest part. God’s love is unconditional, but we need the faith to silence our own voice and listen to his. Then we can really hear what he’s been trying to tell us about our careers all along.

I’ve written Produced by Faith to help you make that leap of faith. By sharing my story and my testimony of how my faith has actually been the greatest asset in my advancement, I hope to inspire you to take a new view of God’s role in your career. At the end of the day, you don’t have to choose between your faith and your work. Faith and works are two sides of the same coin.

Put God in the Director's Chair of Your Career
By Peggy Bowes
Full disclosure: I received a complimentary review copy of this book but was under no obligation to give it a favorable review. As a freelance writer, I receive a lot of books to review, and I was initially going to pass on this one due to a very busy schedule. I put it away in a stack of books, but I kept receiving signs that I should read it. I'm so glad I did because I couldn't put this book down.

DeVon Franklin has written many compelling reasons why placing your career in God's hands will actually give you a competitive edge in business. The book is well-organized and easy to read. Franklin parallels a typical career path with the making of a Hollywood movie. As he educates the reader on the fascinating process of filmmaking, he weaves in his personal faith journey and how it led to his success in an industry that does not exactly promote a Christian atmosphere. He also includes frequent Scripture references, showing how his faith is truly grounded in the Word of God.

Mr. Franklin had to overcome very difficult circumstances to achieve success. His father died when he was a young boy, and his mother raised him and his two brothers as a single mom who was on welfare at one point. It was during this time that DeVon turned to his church and the Word of God for comfort. He also found a type of therapy in watching movies, which led to his career in Hollywood.

Franklin never backs down on his faith, even to the point of not working on the Sabbath despite tremendous pressure to be available at all times. He views his work as serving God and his neighbor, even if it's as humble as copying, filing and answering the phone. He gently guides the reader to trust in God and to see that God wants you to be happy and successful in your career. Franklin also shows the reality of difficult circumstances and how faith and trust in God in times of difficulty can help you learn skills and lessons that will lead to later success.

Even though the book describes a Hollywood executive's career path, the advice can apply to people of all professions. Franklin quotes Martin Luther King, Jr. in a particularly relevant quote:

"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, `Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.'"

I have already begun applying Mr. Franklin's advice to my own career and am reaping the benefits of viewing my work in writing as well as the humble and mundane duties of wife and mother as a vocation and part of God's plan.

I highly recommend this book!

A splendid meditation on work and faith
By AustinVince
I was fortunate enough to get a pre-publication copy of this book through a friend in the media, and initially I was skeptical. I'm not a religious believer and this is a book steeped in the Christian faith of its author. Then I started reading it, and I was struck not only by Mr. Franklin's candor but his wisdom. He and his co-author, Mr. Vandahey, have done a marvelous job of weaving the story of a developing life into the metaphor of a film in the various stages of production and distribution; it's a brilliant literary conceit. But more than that, they have produced a warm, human, hopeful book about faith that also works for people who don't share the author's faith. This is a book that anyone with a career should read, because we all face the same questions Mr. Franklin has faced? How much of myself do I surrender to climb the ladder? Do I have to compromise my values to be a success? Can I dedicate myself to my work and still be a good person, or is selling out the only choice? Believe me, if DeVon Franklin has been able to walk the straight and narrow road in Hollywood, of all places, we can all do it. I am not a Christian, and I loved this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Added to the list of Inspirational Classics
By Natasha M. Dixon
Very rarely does a book come along that can truly help give you direction for your life. The last book I read that seemed to do this was The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. Today I can add another book to the list of such greats. Produced By Faith: Enjoying Real Success Without Losing Your True Self by DeVon Franklin is a guide for living your life fully without compartmentalizing or compromising any aspect of yourself.

Produced By Faith parallels the steps of producing a film with the reader's life. It is divided into two sections, development and production. At first glance the table of contents seems impersonal: What's the Big Idea, Selling It, Writing the Script, Getting Notes, Development Hell, God's Budget and Production Schedule, It's All About Casting, and God's Green Light. However, these chapters do more than just tell you what goes into producing a movie. They guide you through the most important production you will ever be involved in, your life.

Produced By Faith is a very personal book that encourages the reader to review how they have been doing life. It gives practical steps to help you through the process. At the end of each chapter there is a list of questions that everyone should ask themselves at some point in their career; Making this more than just another stagnant book that goes on the shelf after its read. It has somewhat of a workbook or reference book quality, with a very conversational style. There is also a transparent quality to this book, because of the personal accounts of Mr. Franklin's experience that have been weaved throughout. He gives insight into his journey from intern to Vice President at Sony Pictures.

This book comes from a faith based perspective, but it is also a practical guide for those who may not be believers; going as far as to say it is a good beginner's manual for someone interested in producing alone. This is a book that should be handed out at airports, train stations, and bus stations to every bright eyed and bushy tailed artist coming to make it in Hollywood. At the same time it is a great read everyone, in any line of work, can enjoy and implement. When you finish reading this book you will have a renewed faith; faith in God, faith in yourself, and faith in the unlimited possibilities for your life.

Valentine's Kandy, by Kris P. Kreme

Yet another Valentine's Day has come and nearly gone for Jason, a somewhat bitter guy who spends most of these holidays working the late shift at a convenience store. Unlike many his age, Jason opted out of attending college, choosing to cut his own path in life, to seek his own place. He never imagined that his place would be stuck on Valentine's night alone with Kelly, the girl who easily could have filled a year's worth of fantasies.

Kelly is a smart girl, the type of girl who knows what she's doing with her life, and has the college credits to prove it. She's more organized, more focused, and easily slashes all rumors about blondes being dumb. This year it's Jason who finds himself feeling dumb as he and Kelly work the registers of a totally empty store.

The boredom alone is enough to drive Jason crazy but knowing that he can always count on Kelly's upbeat and always chipper friends to stop by as well as her twin sister Kylie makes the night that much more painful.

Fortunately his pains are about to be eased as Jason discovers one odd bag of candy among those he and Kelly idly organize at the registers. This one bag of candy seems out of place, looking similar enough to the standard message heart candies but with subtle differences beginning quite simply with the spelling of the word candy.

Valentine's Kandy it seems is geared towards a much more adult consumer, and the messages written on the tiny colored hearts brings more than a smile to Jason's face. With catchy little slogans like Silly Slut and Fill Her Up, Jason just knows that sharing these with a good girl like Kelly will be perfect for a laugh. The last thing he expects is that when Kelly eats one of the candies, the sugar rush will send more than energy flowing through her.

These candies it seems cause a very strong reaction in whoever consumes them, a reaction that makes them embody whatever message is written on the candy. As Kelly goes from brainy coed to silly slut, the night gets a whole lot more entertaining and Jason finds that sweet can chase bitter right out of his system.

When Kylie shows up with three of Kelly's college friends, the Valentine's party really begins, and no one will ever be the same again. Even the one customer of the evening gets caught in the crossfire and heads home to do much more than celebrate with his eager girlfriend.

What Jason and everyone at the convenience store that night never suspect is that all of this may have been conveniently planned by a certain underworld group dedicated to spreading lust across the planet. This is certainly no day off for Cupid as the Valentine's Kandy creates a lust everyone loves to live.

Grab the all new holiday treat, fresh from the Kreme; have some Valentine's Kandy.

Useful Advice for Those in Their 30s and 40s with Little Savings
By Donald Mitchell
I have not read any other books in this series, but the subject matter of this book appealed to me. I often run into people who (for various reasons) don't have much liquid wealth going into their 40s. Yet I haven't seen much written to suggest what these folks should do. I was hoping to get some ideas to share. Unfortunately, I didn't really find any that I didn't know about already.

If you are over 50, this book won't provide you with the advice you need. The intellectual process that Mr. Bach went through was to take the familiar arguments about the power of compound interest and saving with pre-tax dollars . . . and think of a few ways to shorten up the number of years required for compound interest to do its thing on your behalf. His best suggestions outside the standard financial planning advice are to be more valuable at work so you can earn more raises and promotions . . . and paying down your mortgage a little faster than is required.

I applaud his advice that people spend less on things that don't provide much benefit . . . but most people are going to be demoralized if that's the main source of increased liquid wealth. After all, most people want wealth not for retirement . . . but to enjoy life before and after they retire.

I found his arguments about starting your own business to earn more money to be naive at best . . . and overoptimistic at worst. Buying and running . . . or starting and running a business requires a lot of hard work and skill. Most successful entrepreneurs are off doing this by around age 35. Most people at 49 will find it a tough hill to climb. I applaud Mr. Bach's suggestion that people look into buying, operating, expanding and then selling franchised operations that meet his criteria. The other ideas won't work for most people based on historical averages.

I was also puzzled by his emphasis on having one-third of your liquid financial wealth in bonds. That's been one of the lowest returning classes of investment over the last 150, 100, 50, and 25 years. Why deliberately earn less when you have a long time horizon?

Much of the appeal of this book is that Mr. Bach is optimistic by nature, has a kindly interest in people and aspires for people to accomplish more. Bravo for that attitude!

I also found that Mr. Bach uses quantitative examples to explain compound interest and pre-tax versus after-tax investments much better than most financial planners do.

If you are under 45 and have never read a book about financial planning before, you will find this to be a valuable resource. If you are familiar with financial planning, you can skip this book. If you are not inclined to plan, don't know anything about financial planning and find math to be challenging, this book will provide useful new perspectives for you.

Great Advice
By Janice
For the longest time, I thought I was the only one- the only one drowning in debt, with no savings and not a dime in retirement. I thought I would be the only one of my family or friends that would have to say no to all those wonderful travel opportunities, who wouldn't be able to take those leisurely, late afternoon lunches, who would never go shopping again unless it was for groceries, the only one who would have to continue working well through my "golden years" just to make ends meet. I was so scared that I would be living on such a fixed income, that I would worry about every last cent that I spent. I thought I would never be able to retire because I had started thinking about my long term financial plans much too late.

Then I read Start Late, Finish Rich and now I understand that I haven't doomed myself to working into my seventies or eighties. I can still make it and make it big!

I started with my debt as I felt like this was the biggest factor holding me back. I took Mr. Bach's advice to call all of my credit card companies and ask for lower interest rates. At first they balked, but with a little persistence and, sometimes a supervisor on the phone, almost every one of them lowered my interest rate by at least 5-10%. There were a few companies that wouldn't cooperate and therefore, didn't deserve my business. Those balances I transferred to new cards offering me a ZERO % interest rate. Next, I began making more than the minimum monthly payments, as much more as I could. Now I can see the progress I am making with each monthly statement and I am proud of the difference I am making in my own life!

Then, I began contributing more to my 401k. I set aside an additional $20 a week, just an extra $80 a month. I found this money in my "double latte factor", literally. When I began to realize how much I spent each day on gourmet coffee, my mouth dropped open. I still enjoy one cup of the coffee of the day (not a latte or some other fancy drink) and still managed to save $5 a day and there was my extra $20 a week! And, my amazing employer matches my contribution 100%. I am saving an extra $160 a month. That's $1920 a year and it is money I was literally just throwing away.

I still have a ways to go and more of this wonderful advice to incorporate, but after all, as David Bach says, this is not a sprint- it is a marathon. But thanks to Start Late, Finish Rich, I will finish that marathon just a little faster and a little richer! I am now confident that I will be able to retire comfortably and will be able to enjoy every minute!

Don't Waste Your Money!
By Sally
David Bach is in the business of making money, not of helping people. As soon as he has you figure out your "Latte Factor" (the way you overspend without realizing it -- like buying daily lattes), he draws you to his website where he tries to sell you more books, tapes, CDs, etc., directly threatening that Latte Factor. Please don't be fooled by this man's intentions.

If you're forty, in excellent health, live in an affordable neighborhood, and plan to spend your life making money, this book will probably work for you, although there is nothing here you won't find in a hundred other books on personal finance. Try "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." It's an easier read.

David Bach does not consider people on fixed incomes, those with health issues, people who are required to stay in certain locations because of work, and those of us who simply do not want to give up the treat of one movie a month in order to devote our existences to Making More Money.

Mr. Bach really doesn't intend this book for anyone over forty . . . maybe forty-five. If you're in your fifties or sixties, this book will most likely frustrate you and make you feel like a failure, unless you've got a prime job and a nice nest egg already begun.

The author sees the world of the middle-and-lower classes through rose colored glasses. His answer to credit debt is to just get on the phone, call your creditors, and "talk them into" lowering your rates so you can pay your cards off sooner. If any of you have tried this you know it's easier said than done. Mr. Bach denies the fact that he really does expect everyone to give up lattes, movies, dinners out, and other treats . . . except for his book. That's an "investment." The author also seems to think that everyone lives in a neighborhood where foreclosures are nice little homes in the suburbs rather than shacks built on gang turf. He gives false information about IRAs; he is simply wrong in his figures. The author further thinks that all of his suggested investments will bring you a ten percent profit. I've been watching a couple of his favorite funds, and they're not all that stable. He also expect those of us who're growing older and less energetic to take on second jobs, including franchises. And of course everyone must get into the real estate game. I don't know how many hours a day are on Mr. Bach's clock, but my middle-class clock only gives me twenty-four.

To shorten this up, please believe that there are many many assumptions and descrepancies in this book. People with any sort of limitations fall right through the cracks. So unless you are in very early middle-age, are in perfect health, and plan to devote your life to dying with the thought "Hey, at least I'm rich!", please forego this book for one that's easier on the ego and nerves.

I stood in front of our local bookstore and gave my copy of "Start Late, Finish Rich" to the first over-fifty customer who walked by. He said he'd pass it on.
