About the Author
Paul Pojman completed his Ph. D. at Indiana University, in the department of History and Philosophy of Science. He is currently Assistant Professor at Towson University in the Philosophy Department, and Associated Faculty with the Environmental Studies and Science Programs.

Louis P. Pojman (1935-2005) was Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the United States Military Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a Rockefeller Fellow at Hamburg University. He received his D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1997.His first position was at the University of Notre Dame, after which he taught at the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, at the University of Mississippi, he served for three years as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 1995, he became Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He most recently was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah and Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Oxford University. Pojman won several research and teaching awards, including the Burlington Northern Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship (1988) and the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher in the Humanities at the University of Mississippi (1994). He wrote in the areas of philosophy of religion, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy and authored or edited more than 30 books and 100 articles. Louis Pojman passed away in 2005.

Semi-relevant text

This text was required reading for a graduate level environmental ethics course. While I felt that some of the essays were relevant, more than a few came across as lengthy diatribes filled with dense self-important babbling. In some cases concepts were introduced that were never fully explained, and then were critiqued by other authors who also did not feel a pressing need to define said concept(s). The lack of an index for this anthology made many such essays particularly difficult to get through, as it felt that the editors were in some ways just as confused as the readers when bringing together important concepts for useful review. Future editions could benefit from a lengthier introduction to each subject chapter, with indexed references, put together by the editors, and would in all probability then make this a superior text in the field. Updating many of the essays to reflect current schools of thought would also be useful. All in all, three stars for format.

A well-balanced anthology

"Environmental Ethics: Readings in Theory and Application" is about the best anthology dealing specifically with environmental ethics that I have come across. Now in its Sixth Edition, "Environmental Ethics" includes an excellent balance of classical (e.g., Kant and J.S. Mill) and contemporary writings in the field. Moreover, the articles anthologized represent a range of viewpoints, with no one perspective dominating. A proper balance has been struck.

Topics include animal rights, pollution, population and consumption, ecological ethics, climate change, econfeminism, sustainability, and others. Each major section is preceded by a brief but helpful introduction setting out the major issues and giving a quick synopsis of the various articles that follow. There is more than enough material in this anthology for a semester-length course devoted specifically to environmental ethics.

Like most texts, the price tag is far more than it should be. But this drawback does not detract from the quality of the book.

damn b, this made my head think, a lot. A great selection of pieces, some essential readings within, totally worth the buy bro. After reading this book you will be saying "I am the walrus." The only thing this book needs is more cowbell. Can land, water, and air have inherent value? I don't know but this book may say something about it. The only way to find out is to read it. Dharma in Practical Terms

To put it plainly, this is the best book I've ever read for an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. B. Alan Wallace explains the major parts of Tibetan Dharma practice in very Western, everyday language. Never does he simplify or generalize, he's a talented author with a deep understanding of his subject and an ability to put it into to terms that a beginner from the West can understand. Whenever I've been asked to recommend literature on Buddhism, this is the first book on the list. Its absolutely the best. I cannot recommend it more highly!

Finally, a direct and cogent introduction of the essence of Tibetan Buddhism

One has to appreciate the fact that many books taking on this task that was given in this short, under 200 pages are as introductions anywhere from 450 to 650 pages. If one wants more detail check out John Powers', Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism which runs, as an introduction, some 470 pages. For one who is looking for the essence of this practice without too much dedication of time, this is the book. You will come away with a very good idea of what this type of buddhism is and why it is important.

This was a great introductory book on Buddhism. It was well written, easy to read, and covered all the general yet important aspects of Buddhism. The author obviously has an in depth understanding of his subject. A must read for anyone seriously interested in this topic.

I have likened most psychology and counseling texts as being about as exciting to read as a Chilton's car repair manual.
Human beings are such wonderfully complex and fascinating of all of creation; so much so that one would think that the study thereof would be more engrossing and absorbing than what it actually is (in the classroom, that is).
Enter "Behind The Mask," one of the most thorough, comprehensive and insightful books I have ever read on human nature. Unlike many of my other texts, this one is a "keeper."
Scholarly without pedantry, entertaining at times, thought-provoking at others, this book should be required reading in any mental health related profession.
This is the kind of book that one will refer back to repeatedly (this book is a lot like Yalom's in this regard)as there will always be something "to chew on."

About the Author

Thomas F. Pettigrew is Research Professor of Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since 1956, he has published 400 articles, book chapters, and reviews in addition to sixteen books and monographs. Pettigrew is widely credited with keeping social psychology’s focus on intergroup contact over the past half-century. This research has focused on determining the critical links between the macro (cultural and structural), meso (situational), and micro (individual) levels of social science theory and research – with intergroup contact constituting one of these links. Pettigrew served as president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) and later received the Society’s Kurt Lewin and Distinguished Service Awards and twice its Gordon Allport Intergroup Research Award. In 2002, the Society for Experimental Social Psychology presented him with its Distinguished Scientist Award.

Linda R. Tropp is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Psychology of Peace and Violence Concentration at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her main research interests concern experiences with intergroup contact among members of minority and majority status groups, identification with social groups, interpretations of intergroup relationships, and responses to prejudice and disadvantage. She is a recipient of the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize for her research on intergroup contact, and she received the McKeachie Early Career Award for the teaching of psychology.

Absolutely brilliant book

The sheer volume of empirical research that form the basis of the practical group theory that Pettigrew and Tropp postulate makes this THE standard by which all other group research will be judged.

informative but boring

This book covers a lot of information but is completely redundant and dry. Organization is fine but it could be a lot better.
