Great BooK!

This was a text used in class, and while the teacher did mostly lecturing without the text, it was a great resource-easy to understand, and highly applicable. THe text does a great job of really explaining the material in a clear and concise manner.

pleasantly surprised

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.

The author explains the rise of the two superpowers immediately after World War II and discusses the historical controversy over the origins of the Cold War. He describes the growing confrontation between East and West in Europe dating from the announcement of the Truman Doctrine in 1949 to the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.

The analysis includes coverage of the extension of the conflict beyond Europe to China, Korea, and Vietnam and also to the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The author highlights the role of Nixon and Kissinger in an examination of the rise and fall of detente during the 1970s. He explains, too, how superpower relations were dramatically altered during the 1980s by the impact of Reagan and Gorbachev. Finally, the book offers an assessment of the reasons for the sudden ending of the Cold War and its final outcome.

About the Author
Joseph Smith is Reader in American Diplomatic History at the University of Exeter. He has previously taught at the College of William & Mary and the University of Denver. He is General Editor of the Historical Association Studies series.

6-8 year olds perceive the play and listen concept as a fun reward while reading and learning

Some content on the states could be more in depth, however our 6 year daughter and her 7 and 8 year buddies love these books. We have one on music also (found on clearance still in the wrapper in Central America for only $14). Getting to push numbers and listen to excerpts about the reading material is a big hit with the children, who perceive it as a reward while they are learning. Its a fun concept to motivate children to engage in reading and social studies. I'd like to get the version on health as well. $24 is the maximum that should be paid for the book, rather than the 30+ its been shown for on Amazon. Some educational sites do carry the books as well, so shop around.
