A classic I can revisit

I chose this book in the 1970s when I wanted to begin Hatha Yoga. I found it's step-by-step and day-by-day method very effective. I liked three days of progress followed by one day oc rest and consolidation. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I had learned and absorbed after 28 days.

I always intended this to be a baby book, an introduction, and I fully expected to have to find better books later as I advanced. It turned out that this book was good enough on its own. I lost track of it over the years, and was please to be able to find the book again.

This book is in a larger format than the original pocket-sized book I once had. You can still get the smaller book. I like the larger format.

I regret discontinuing my yoga practice. I had started late, in my thirties, and after a few years I had had made good progress. I don't remember why I stopped, except that I did when I got remarried. I must have been distracted by a full life.

I remember coming home from work and being tired. The last thing I wanted to do was thirty minutes of yoga. I almost always practiced anyway, and when I was finished I felt refreshed and glad that I had made the effort.

Now, as a senior, I believe it is best to return to at least some parts of Hatha Yoga in order to gain flexibility and suppleness. I dislike the idea of slowly becoming rigid and contracted, both physically and mentally.

A Classic

Richard Hittleman is how I learned hatha yoga after suffering a neck injury from a car accident in the mid-1980's. My doctor at that time recommended I try yoga to offset the chronic pain I was experiencing. This was long before yoga became the popular craze it is today and, back then at that time, the only people I knew who did yoga were kind of weird (no offense anybody!). I discovered his original book in the library, checked it out and began my 28 day program. I was a little skeptical at first but really wanted to feel better and keep chronic pain at bay. Well, the first two days I was so stiff and sore which was crazy to me since I exercised and that made me even more determined to be able to do what looked like very simple poses. By Day 10 or Day 11 let me tell you I was definitely hooked!!!! I was not as stiff or sore, I was in less pain, I was seeing progress and I went out and bought my own copy of the book. I hadn't even finished the 28 days when I realized my pain levels really had decreased. My body felt firmer and tighter. My muscles felt lengthened. I lost weight. I had more energy.

Richard is the master and created a systematic approach that builds upon each day to show you new asanas and clearly explain how to do them and their purpose. His tone is patient and affirming. Each chapter ends with thoughts for the day which recap the daily lesson or offers other health tip benefits. He provides 3 yoga routines at the back of the book that are all referenced if you need to go back to read the instruction on how to perform a pose. Truthfully, I still prefer using the routines in his book to today's newer yoga DVDs. Something about his book is just pure. Over the years I have been up/down in my practice with this book but he has a routine that remains my "go to" today if I am short on time or energy in the chapter Work is Not Exercise that always leaves me feeling revitalized and refreshed no matter how tired I was when I started the routine. I always struggle with weight issues and the routines in this book helped me lose weight. This book is also responsible for changing my approach to diet and nutrition and I eliminated several items from my diet that I still don't eat today. I try to do his routines 3-4 times per week.

My original book is so tattered and torn from using it so much. I've gone back to his original book so many times and decided I wanted to see if it was still available. I was thrilled to find it here and in the "larger size". This book contains the exact same content as the original but is just super sized compared to the original pocket sized book. The original pocket sized book is also available here at amazon. Over time you will come to memorize the three routines but I just like going back to the book. Each time I read it there are new nuggets to discover and pick up.

Fantastic book for Beginner Yoga program

fantastic beginner's Yoga book with clear pictures and day-by-day instructions to progress you with a great foundational program in Yoga. Cannot recommend highly enough. So glad to find this larger edition, with the bigger pictures, again. I have given away several copies to folks who expressed interest in Yoga, but too shy to show up to a beginner's class--which are sometimes difficult to find and usually have folks with much more experience in there, so makes the beginner uncomfortable. With Richard Hittleman's book, you can start your program at home at your own pace and there is definitely no pressure to push yourself beyond your limits as you sometimes find in some classes. He expressly warns you to take it easy and never hurt yourself. Fantastic Book that should never go out of print!

This book is dull and dry as wood shavings. I hoped it would be cheap but it is not. It is amazing how someone can make an interesting discipline so boring. Reading it is a punishment. I can't imagine why anyone would want to read it.

Upholds a love of knowlege

I've been waiting for a book like this - one that would clearly expose the shortcomings of relativism. Boghossian does just that, demonstrating the person claiming 'everything is relative' faces a predicament. Either the statement itself is true, and thereby defeating the statement. Or it's relative to the individual, which means the person holding an objectivist view point is just as correct as the relativist. And therefore it's a meaningless statement. These are the kinds of points Boghossian makes through the book, both with generosity and clarity.

While this is essentially a philosophy book, he presents his ideas in a very accessible way. As a result, his case is compelling and persuasive. As William Ewald said, this is a book that can be read in an afternoon and thought about for a lifetime - a reference to the book's brevity (at 139 pages) and it's depth.

At the same time, I wish Boghossian had asked questions about why humanity fears knowledge. Namely, what is it about the human condition which causes people to avoid making clear distinctions reflected in strong assertions about the way things are? Why is there an assumption that conviction and belief are the equivalents of arrogance and intolerance? What is it about knowledge which threatens people?

With that said, this is a very thoughtful book and one which will hopefully have a real impact, not just in the academy, but also in the public square. If relativism reigns then dialog and discourse are severely hampered. May this book contribute to keeping those flames alive in the Western World.

Effective Epistemic Polemic

This concise and well done book is devoted to rebutting relativistic anti-realist arguments that are apparently popular in some areas of the modern academy. I think Boghossian has a specific audience in mind. This book is not aimed primarily at his fellow philosophers nor the general reading public but rather at academics in humanities and social sciences where the relativist ideas have become popular. Boghossion points out that there is a widespread impression that modern analytic philosophy has undermined realist views and this impression provides legitimacy for the relativist points of view. As Boghossian also points out, these relativist views have actually been relatively unsuccessful in Philosophy Depts. and there are considerable doubts about their validity. Boghossian aims at presenting a fair characterization of relativist views and then providing an up to date critical attack. The philosopher Richard Rorty is a particular target, partly because of his prominence and partly because Boghossian regards him as expounding some of the most powerful relativist arguments. Boghossian examines relativist claims in three domains. These are relativism regarding the existence of 'facts," that is, a mind independent world, relativism concerning justification of knowledge (probably the strongest relativist argument and one articulated by Rorty), and relativism concerning rational explanation. The attack on relativism concerning rational explanation is the shortest and least satisfactory section, though still effective. I think he is generally fair to all these arguments and resists constructing straw man positions for his opponents. This criticisms of these positions are strong and he argues well for the general incoherence and incompleteness of relativist positions. If anything, I would say that he bends over backwards to be fair to relativist positions, omitting some strong arguments against Rorty and Thomas Kuhn.

This book is a well-written attack on certain anti-realist, relativistic and post modernist strains in our culture and acdemic philosophy. It is well written in the sense that it is clear and concise but my main issue against it is that it is a little too concise (more than it should be) because it almost entirely deals with naive forms of anti-realism. It is a good introduction to the topic but stronger arguments have been made in contemporary times which Boghossian does not deal with in this work. Much of the positions Boghossian destroys are from Richard Rorty, the early Hilary Putnam and some of Wittgenstein's more obscure writings. But the objections he raises against them are not new and stronger versions of those arguments along with different arguments altogether have been proposed to argue for certain positions Boghossian is against (sometimes by these very philosophers later in life). Rorty's views on the subjects in question are actually considered laughably impotent among most working philosophers today and are not given much attention for that reason as with almost all of the other post-modern criticisms of realism and truth absolutism.

Even though I am very sympathetic to Boghossian's ultimate position of arguing against anti-realist and relativistic strains within our culture and philosophy, Boghossian, as far as I'm aware, does not advance new arguments; some of his arguments have been around since Plato used them against the sophist Protagoras (or at least Plato's version of Protagoras). Boghossian also does not advance arguments against the most sophisticated versions of these strains of thought (especially against fact constructivism). If you're looking for a good, clear, concise work on the history of these ideas within western thought sans work done in the last 50 years, this book is for you. If you're looking for the cutting-edge of philosophical work on anti-realism and relativism in philosophy of science, epistemology and metaphysics, this book falls short. It either does not deal with it at all or glosses over much of that work sometimes seemingly flippantly. If you want to get a general overview of the cutting edge work and contemporary stronger arguments in favor of relativism and anti-realism, use the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy site to search for the articles "realism," "Scientific Realism," "Semantic Challenges to Realism" and "relativism."

These are clearly well thought out questions and thoroughly researched answers that I would strongly recommend to every practitioner of Surgical Critical or Trauma Surgical Care especially those that are preparing for Certification or Recertification examinations.
There are however a few instances in which the justifications put forth for the "correct" answers rely on information not included in the question.
There are also instances in which multiple equivalent answer options are given in the multiple choice format. For example in regard to Chapter 4, Question 17, I contend that options (A) and (B) are equally true and considering the framing of the question (the key word is "early"), one could defend selecting answer A over B.
Just nit picking but otherwise, this is an excellent and helpful teaching booklet.

This forth edition has been greatly expanded including additional material from a third contributor Rebecca Yin Foo, who also writes a helpful introduction... About the Author
KATHRYN GELDARD, PhD, is a lecturer and counsellor supervisor in the School of Psychology and Counselling at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. Her research interests include adolescent peer counselling and counselling effectiveness as perceived by the adolescent client in the QUT Psychology and Counselling Clinic.

Kathryn is currently conducting research with Australian Aboriginal adolescents with regard to developing a culturally sensitive peer support program in a regional community. She is the author of a number of textbooks on counselling and has several years experience in supervising and training counsellors.

David Geldard has an international reputation as a counselling psychologist and for his work in counselling children and their families.

Rebecca Yin Foo is an educational and developmental psychologist who specialises in working with children and families.

Excellent Introduction book to Counseling Children

First of all, the book itself is great quality all around - it just looks and feels nice. The size is also a plus! (smaller than some).

Secondly, this was a required text for my Master's program and I'm very glad it was. The chapters are short, extremely easy to read, and very insightful. While some of the material might seem a bit common sense, there are many great takeaways throughout each chapter. Often these great insights originate from the simple fact of how different counseling children is than counseling adolescents and/or adults. Kathryn, David, and Rebecca have wrote a textbook that many other author's should take notes on as it does not become so overwrought with ridiculous amounts of referencing or words that most people don't even know exist. Instead I found myself swiftly reading through each assigned chapter with ease and enjoyment (something that doesn't happen often when it comes to a textbook).

If you need this as a required reading for a class then I am assuming you have to get it either way. So all my review can do is let you know this one is worth your money, especially if you are interested in the possibility of working with children in your profession.

If you stumbled upon this and thought it might make a good addition to your academic collection and pursuits for your profession - I would highly recommend giving it a shot.

About the Author
Ray Buckley is the interim Director of the Center for Native American Spirituality and Christian Study. Buckley has served The United Methodist Church as a staff member of The United Methodist Publishing House, Director of the Native People’s Communication Office (UMCom) for nine years, and Director of Connectional Ministries for the Alaska Missionary Conference.

Buckley is the author/illustrator of five books: God’s Love is Like…(1998,Abingdon Press), The Give-Away: A Christmas Story in the Native American Tradition (1999, Abingdon Press), The Wing (2002, Abingdon Press), Christmas Moccasins (2003, Abingdon Press), and Dancing with Words: Storytelling as Legacy, Culture, and Faith (Discipleship Resources, 2003). He is also the author of Creator Sang a Welcoming Song (2007), and Walking in These White Man Shoes (2007), children and youth resources for the Women’s Dvision School of Missions. The Give-Away was selected to appear on the CBS Christmas Eve special, An American Christmas, produced by the National Council of Churches. His stories, poetry, and art have appeared in numerous journals, periodicals, books, and museums.

Buckley has taught in Nigeria, and Ghana, and served as a lecturer in Native American studies for several universities.

Ray Buckley was a keynote speaker at the Jubilee 2000, Cardinal Maeda Institute. At the invitation of the Council of Canadian Catholic Bishops, he has twice appeared on the nationally televised Canadian Catholic Broadcasting Corporation’s Lenten series. In July 2001, Ray was a keynote speaker at the General Synod of the UCC/Disciples of Christ General Assembly. In 2003, 2004, and 2007, Mr. Buckley was a guest lecturer at the Pontifical Biblical Institute of the Vatican.

Ray was chosen as the Howard Preacher for Phillip’s Theological Seminary, delivered the McDonald Lecture Series (New Mexico), and the Ira Galloway Lecture Series (Peoria, IL). Buckley was one of five keynote speakers at Youth 2007 (SPLAT), sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship.

Wonderful story

Such a great story and the artwork is beautiful. I read this to the congregation at the Christmas Eve service. It opens the reader up to a different perspective on the typical birth narrative stories. Highly recommend.

Great book used in religious education class

Both the illustrations and the story are wonderful. The book artfully combines Native American spirituality aspects with Christian aspects. I used this book in a "children's church" class at our Native American / Catholic church at Christmas. The kids loved the story and afterwards made a collage of Jesus in the manager surrounded by all the animals mentioned in the story. The book could be used during Easter as well or during a discussion about Native American give-aways.

Combining Native American spirituality with Christianity

This Christmas picture book is a powerful telling of God's plan for the birth of Jesus. The story is told as a folktale and based on the Native American tradition of give-aways. In this story, the oldest and wisest of every walking and flying animal gather in the oldest forest to to discuss the state of humanity. They recognize how humans have forgotten their connections with God, each other, the animals, and the Earth. Then, the wise turtle proclaims that she will give of herself - her shell - and in her giving, she hopes that humans will be reminded of who they are in connection with all creation. The other animals follow her lead and offer to give the "most costly portion of themselves."

But then, God, called "the Creator," appears and warns the animals that the humans will not know that the animals have given these gifts. Instead, the humans will believe that they have taken from creation as demonstration of their power. The Creator offers the solution: He must give himself away. The Creator says, "I must choose to become small, so that they can choose to know me large." The Creator then explains that he will come to Earth as a baby bringing light, hope, and love. The story really shows its power at the end when the oldest tree asks how it can give to this baby, and the Creator answers that the tree will be his support and place of rest at the beginning and the end. The final page reads that the oldest tree wept, "partly for joy and partly for sorrow," as many of us may feel at the news of Jesus' birth and death.

This story gives some insight into the purpose of Jesus' life - to reconnect humanity to God and all of his creation. It shows how all of creation supports each other and God designed us to work in harmony together. It also depicts Jesus as God's gift to us and communicates the greatness of His sacrifice. The ultimate themes are giving and connection, two beautiful and important lessons for children and adults.

Buckley is a Native American and has worked for good relations with the Native American community and the United Methodist Church in many capacities including interim Director of the Center for Native American Spirituality and Christian Study. There are strong Native American elements in this story that deftly combine the emphasis on the oneness of creation with the reverence for God and Jesus. As Buckley explains in the introduction, the animals are illustrated with red on their faces as a sign of hospitality and friendliness. The story itself is based on the Native American tradition of giving away possessions or sacrificing oneself for the community. Children in mixed and Native American communities will learn a great deal about the relationship between Native American spirituality and Christianity.

Consider reading or performing The Give-Away along with a giving event during the Christmas season. The message of the story is for all and would be a great addition to a family or intergenerational event.
