Well written for beginners
By ut158
I'm a C# developer. I enjoy reading Make Magazine which often touts the usefulness of Raspberry Pi and Arduino in projects, but I've never gotten around to actually using one before--mostly because I haven't felt committed enough to the idea to try and figure out how to interface with them, etc. Now, having read through the book a bit, I feel confident that I could easily grab a Pi and get it up and running in minutes.
For those who don't know, Raspberry Pi is really just a miniature computer. Like--super miniature and costs under $40. This book focuses on the newer, more powerful Raspberry Pi 2 Model B , although you could get an earlier and/or lower power model and this book would still be perfectly relevant.
I felt this book was well written for absolute beginners. If you already know a bit about programming, then you'll want to skip several large chunks of it (like lengthy explanations of what variables are and why we would want to use them, etc.), but at the same time, I appreciated the "don't assume I already know what you're talking about" approach because there was plenty that I didn't know about the Pi hardware itself and how you are supposed to interact with it and since they covered everything, now I feel confident that there aren't any basics I'm missing.
If I had to find something to improve about the book, I think I'd have the author be sure to always define what the various acronyms stand for. He got many of them (mostly the stuff I know), but missed a few (mostly the stuff I didn't know). Since it is a book for beginners, a couple pronunciations could have been given, as well. In fairness, it is possible that perhaps these things were in one of the sections I skipped...
If you know someone who is (or if you yourself are) interested in getting started in writing programs or trying out one of the many projects out there that require some computational power to work, then I think this would be an excellent book to get started. If you have ever interfaced with a Raspberry Pi before, then this will all be below your level and you should look at something more--perhaps a book that focuses on Python, for example (this book talks about it briefly, but you aren't going to become an expert Python programmer by reading it).

Python programming for kids using Raspberry Pi
By Mike Wallace
If you don't know what the Raspberry Pi is it is a low-cost computer that kids and enthusiasts can use to learn programming, computing, and how to build cool things like robots and speakers. In spite of being someone who would have loved this as a kid, I have to claim ignorance until I started reading this book.
The Pi is a small 4 1/2 X 3-inch board with a chip and ports. USB ports enable us to plug in a keyboard, mouse, and display. There are also additional components for making projects. Reading through this book the topic is explained clearly, and yet it isn't as dumbed down as some of the Dummy's books I've encountered. After I realized the outlet for creativity and the chance to learn basic Python in a practical way, I started shopping for a PI of my own. I am in luck the Raspberry PI 3 came out today.
I can't wait to try out some of the examples in this book along with other projects. This book is clear and yet informative. It is enough to get an oldy like me excited about PI and programming. I think most technically inclined kids would find it useful and would enjoy doing Raspberry PI projects along with the low-cost of entry. This is a nice way to give kids that tech jump start we didn't get.

Great introduction to Python programing or kids – and adults!
By Jerry Saperstein
My grandson has been flirting with learning about programming for the past two years through summer computer camps. I’d like to see him get more deeply involved, particularly with Python which is (with extensions) an incredibly powerful language. Like a law degree, it will, in m my opinion, always be useful. Thinking like a programmer in this era is, to me, a necessity.
To use this book as intended, you will have to spend $50 or less acquiring a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B Arudino computer, a keyboard, mouse and monitor. (A late-model TV will do.)
Author Ryan Heitz’ approach is fun. He explains the history of the Raspberry Pi, the evolution of Python – both briefly, of course – and then lays out the elements of programming, which ore experienced people will skip. His projects are simple and, most importantly, fun. I’m going to buy a Raspberry Pi board and work through the book and then see if my grandson (and maybe even my granddaughter) want to share Grandpa’s newest passion.
I’ve tried to ignite that interest before with books and pointing out that he can install and learn Python on his laptop computer without much success. Maybe this will meet with greater success.
