3.5 stars, but with potential!

I reluctantly gave this book 3.5 stars because I thought the story had a lot of potential but it wasn't met. I'll explain further...

The story is about Jake, a teenager (I believe in Grade 11?) who has just discovered that he possesses a special gift, and he is a "gifted one". He is told by other gifted that he can't be with the girl he recently started a relationship with (and loves) because he will just endanger her, and they give him many examples of gifted ones losing people they love to the defiers because they target their weaknesses. There is not much information given about the defiers or where they come from, but we assume they are "evil" and the gifted ones are "good"

Nice idea with the gifts and how they manifest themselves and how they train together and so on, but not clear on what the covenant is, or what the rules are, or what their purpose is.

Why I deducted 1.5 stars:
First (minus half star)- while we are told that Jake and Anna have been best friends since they were young and had strong feelings for each other, I just didn't feel it. Their relationship seemed a bit (and I hate to say this word) cheesy. She was ready to give up on him so quickly and he was ready to give up on her so easily because someone told him so, I just think love is usually stronger than that, and harder to let go of, and it just didnt feel that strong to me.

Second - finally! A YA book told SOLELY from a male point of view!... but Jake kinda thought and acted like....a girl. He didn't really have a strong male personality like I've read in other books that have dual points of view but that's just my opinion and I couldn't really deduct a star for that.

Lastly (minus one star) and this could just be me totally, but the first 2/3 of the book seemed to draaaaaaggg... Things didn't really pick up until the end, and I'll be honest, I almost gave up on something eventful happening and I actually paused this book to read another that was released, and then continued it after. If I can put a book down to read another, and it doesn't keep me up until 2am because I HAVE to know how it ends, I can't give it 5 stars.

Hopefully the sequel picks up on the action a little quicker and gives us a little more background info and keeps me turning those pages.

The premise is interesting, but the characters lacked something.

The overall plot of Branded is interesting. There are people who are Gifted Ones possessing supernatural powers, this story centers on Jacob Rovert and his friends discovering their abilities and how it affects their lives and relationships. On the opposing side, the Defiers have similar powers and are enemies of the Gifted Ones.

Jake's story has potential. He loves a girl that he has grown up with named Anna, but he must keep his powers a secret from her for her own protection. His love for her is obvious in Branded, but I never felt like I understood why Jake loves Anna so passionately. The characters are flat and one dimensional. I was never given a reason to like Anna or even care about what happens to her. I read a bit of the next book in the series, and it appears to be written in Anna's voice, so maybe the author was holding back for that reason, but I just don't feel like this book pulled me in enough to keep me reading the trilogy.

Found the book to be extremely slow and didn't captivate me nor develop the characters enough. Let me tell you what frustrates me about all these positive reviews on here. There are so many fake or false reviews on products if you take the time to research it. This book being a great example. There are about THREE REAL reviews on this book on here. How can you tell? Go to see all my reviews when your reading an individuals review and you will see on here that almost every person who reviewed this item "SO WONFERFUL, GREAT READ, COULDN'T PUT IT DOWM, CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL, ETC" only has written one review EVER and it happens to be for this book. There is your red flag on fake reviews. I also noticed that most of the fake reviewers on here also posted the same review twice to up the star status. Some even had two positive reviews for the same book same reviewer. Let a book speak for itself from true consumers and not a bunch of fake reviews

About the Author
Paolo Antognetti is a professor and chairman of the department of electronic engineering (DIBE) at the University of Genova. His extensive background in semiconductor modeling includes teaching and research positions at Stanford University and MIT. He has contributed to more than fifty papers in the field of electronics and VSLI design and simulation. He has edited several books, including Power Integrated Circuits: Physics, Design, and Applications, also published by McGraw-Hill.

Giuseppe Massobrio is a research associate in the department of electronic engineering (DIBE) at the University of Genova. He has done research in the areas of semiconductor device modeling as well as circuit simulation and optimization. He is the author of several papers on semiconductor device models for CAD applications. He is currently researching the development of semiconductor-based biosensor models for biomedical technologies.

About the Author
Dr John Andreas Olsen is a tutor and researcher at the Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy, where he lectures and writes on military theory, strategy and doctrine. He received his master's degree in British studies in 1995 from the University of Warwick (England) and his doctorate on 'Operation Desert Storm' in 2000 from De Montfort University. He began his military career in 1987, has recently attended the Royal Norwegian Air Force College in Oslo and is currrently working on two projects on the Gulf War of 1990-1991

Very fine study of the 1991 strategic air campaign

This is a study of the strategic air campaign in Desert Storm that is based on the author's academic thesis. It was written in the late 1990s and thus does not reflect the experiences of the Iraq War after 2003. The discussion of the planning of the strategic air campaign is excellent. He covers a lot of the same ground in his subsequent book on John Warden, and of course the essential work on the planning of the Desert Storm air campaign remains Diane Putney's "Airpower Advantage".

Perhaps even more useful is the analysis of the Iraqi power structure. The purpose of this analysis was to show why the strategic air campaign failed to decapitate the regime or destabilize it so that Saddam could be overthrown internally. I have not seen anything like that analysis anywhere else. I suspect that nobody in Washington read this analysis before we invaded in 2003, which was too bad, because the planning and execution of "Iraqi Freedom" could certainly have benefited from it.

I got this book from a library. I don't think I want to pay the crazy amounts of money they want for it new ($50 to $100 or $200). If you can get it used for under $20, that is probably reasonable in my opinion.

Taking sausage seriously.

Another title that sounds like a spoof, this is a serious book about sausage. It's a rather short book even for this series, but sausage fanciers would be mollified by a number of pages of recipes at the end. The illustrations are as usual in this series. excellent.

Allen says that sausage always has its protein cut up in some way. Other than that, it's a loose definition, not just forced meat encased in a natural casing such as intestines. Casings include hog intestines, sheep stomachs, even, says Allen, the air bladder of croakers.

I knew sausage from what might be called the Wisconsin palate, which includes kielbasa (Polish) and bratwurst (German) and the American hot dog. Turns out that sausage has been made from pig's brain, carp, horsemeat, yak blood, squid, dog meat, goat, sheep lung, donkey meat, wild boar, and apparently any kind of meat, many kinds of internal organs and blood. Usually a sausage has 20-30% fat. There is sausage in very many world cuisines.

My two favorite chapters were Chapter 4, "Sausage from Everywhere Else" and Chapter 5, "Technology and the Modern Sausage." Everywhere else means non-European, and they are everywhere! There's also a lot of cross-cuisine. Technology has made the modern sausage extremely variable, and its contents is often a way to market pieces and parts not easily sellable elsewise. The consumers of hot dogs might not want to know what goes into one.

Gary Allen’s delightful new book, Sausage: A Global History, tells the fascinating back-story of sausages and how they evolved into the tasty, flavorful packages found in cuisines around the world. As Allen duly notes, “today sausages are equally at home in street vendors’ carts and in white-tablecloth dining establishments.”
Long ago, our ancestors figured out that the intestines, stomachs, bladders and skins of animals could be useful containers for all the scraps of meat and organs that might otherwise be wasted. So, while it is true that sausage may have started out as “the efficient use of every part of a slaughtered beast,” Allen colorfully describes how they progressed to become “the darling of diners – daring and otherwise.”
Although pork and beef are the ubiquitous varieties, lots of meats have been made into sausages, including lamb, goat, horsemeat, offal, poultry, seafood, and even elephant. Some cultures even have vegetable and grain sausages that predate the modern vegetarian craze.
Allen covers in detail all the diverse and interesting ingredients that provide flavor and texture to these juicy parcels. He discusses some that might seem kind of unusual, including almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pine nuts, cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as more commonly recognized sausage flavorings such as sage, fennel, and garlic. Many of these combinations are a result of the meshing together of various cuisines as they conquered and/or developed trade routes with other regions. Local ingredients were integrated with those from exotic locales to create unique taste sensations.
Sausage cooking and preserving methods are as varied as the ingredients, which results in a rainbow of hues for the finished product. A colorful lot, sausages range in color from the very pale German Weisswurst, which is white because it is unsmoked and contains no nitrites that would turn it pink, to very dark smoked and blood sausages.
Blood is an ingredient that shows up in the earliest sausage references, reflecting the ‘no-waste’ attitudes of the past. Pigs blood is most commonly used – in addition to providing the sausage with a dark color, it also flavors the sausage. Although many might be squeamish about giving it a try, Allen notes that blood sausages are alive and well - part of a trend that is linked to the Slow Food movement, as well as a desire for folks to show respect for the animals we eat, and to explore the taste of history that would otherwise be lost – a way of reviving the kind of frugality that led to the invention of sausages.
Chock-full of historical nuggets and informative references to the present day, this book is a mouthwatering look at this important food that has stood the test of time. Descriptive photos and illustrations are peppered throughout. For those hungering for a taste, Allen provides a selection of sausage recipes – the Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage is definitely on my list of those to try!

It's a decent little book in a series dedicated to food and drink - a good overview, some modern recipes, a fair number of photos and historic advertisements. It's a *much* deeper dive into the history than any other charcuterie book I've read.

The second chapter (the title still makes me snerk - "Some Historical Sausages and the Links Between Them") starts with a couple allusions from The Iliad and goes forward. There are sausage recipes from some of the easily accessible works (Scappi's Opera, Das Book von Guter Spise, Le Menagier de Paris) but also some of the more obscure European and Middle Eastern works.

While it's a thin book, it's a useful one for anyone interested in more than the standard "here are today's recipes from around the world" charcuterie books.

JAIME BENITEZ, PhD, has been teaching mass transfer operations for chemical engineers for twenty-five years. He earned his PhD in environmental engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1976 and is currently Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Puerto Rico at MayagA1/4ez. He is also the author of Process Engineering and Design for Air Pollution Control.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY ENGINEER WORKING WITH AIR POLLUTION EQP

Great book, very comprehensive and easy to understand. In depth knowledge of cost analysis (estimation) and equipment optimization. More value per buck than any other book in the market. This text covers the Cost Estimation Methodology, Adsorption Devices, Flue Gas Desulfurization, Control of Nitrogen Oxides, Particulate Emissions Control, Cyclonic Devices, Electrostatic Precipitators and my all time favorite: Fabric Filters. Everything you need to be a succesful pollution control engineer.

It is an excelent book for students and for profesional chemical engineers. I used it as a undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico. It contains useful algoritms and data as well as optimization techniques for the design of equipment of air Pollution control. You wont find anything better for this price.

Excellent book. I took the class with the author of the book and it was one of the most enriching experiences in my career. The Book is written from a process engineering perspective allowing for the student to understand the design requirements to solve a particular problem related to air pollution control. Also, it is a valuable asset during your chemical engineering design classes and capstone.
