These are clearly well thought out questions and thoroughly researched answers that I would strongly recommend to every practitioner of Surgical Critical or Trauma Surgical Care especially those that are preparing for Certification or Recertification examinations.
There are however a few instances in which the justifications put forth for the "correct" answers rely on information not included in the question.
There are also instances in which multiple equivalent answer options are given in the multiple choice format. For example in regard to Chapter 4, Question 17, I contend that options (A) and (B) are equally true and considering the framing of the question (the key word is "early"), one could defend selecting answer A over B.
Just nit picking but otherwise, this is an excellent and helpful teaching booklet.

Surgucal critical care board preparation

Good review book in Q/A format for surgical critical care board. The Qs are clinically related and covered extensively. Some answers are not updated, especially in the area of antibiotcs or antifungal treatments.

About the Author
KATHRYN GELDARD, PhD, is a lecturer and counsellor supervisor in the School of Psychology and Counselling at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. Her research interests include adolescent peer counselling and counselling effectiveness as perceived by the adolescent client in the QUT Psychology and Counselling Clinic.

Kathryn is currently conducting research with Australian Aboriginal adolescents with regard to developing a culturally sensitive peer support program in a regional community. She is the author of a number of textbooks on counselling and has several years experience in supervising and training counsellors.

David Geldard has an international reputation as a counselling psychologist and for his work in counselling children and their families. 

Rebecca Yin Foo is an educational and developmental psychologist who specialises in working with children and families.

Excellent Introduction book to Counseling Children

First of all, the book itself is great quality all around - it just looks and feels nice. The size is also a plus! (smaller than some).

Secondly, this was a required text for my Master's program and I'm very glad it was. The chapters are short, extremely easy to read, and very insightful. While some of the material might seem a bit common sense, there are many great takeaways throughout each chapter. Often these great insights originate from the simple fact of how different counseling children is than counseling adolescents and/or adults. Kathryn, David, and Rebecca have wrote a textbook that many other author's should take notes on as it does not become so overwrought with ridiculous amounts of referencing or words that most people don't even know exist. Instead I found myself swiftly reading through each assigned chapter with ease and enjoyment (something that doesn't happen often when it comes to a textbook).

If you need this as a required reading for a class then I am assuming you have to get it either way. So all my review can do is let you know this one is worth your money, especially if you are interested in the possibility of working with children in your profession.

If you stumbled upon this and thought it might make a good addition to your academic collection and pursuits for your profession - I would highly recommend giving it a shot.

About the Author
Ray Buckley is the interim Director of the Center for Native American Spirituality and Christian Study. Buckley has served The United Methodist Church as a staff member of The United Methodist Publishing House, Director of the Native People’s Communication Office (UMCom) for nine years, and Director of Connectional Ministries for the Alaska Missionary Conference.

Buckley is the author/illustrator of five books: God’s Love is Like…(1998,Abingdon Press), The Give-Away: A Christmas Story in the Native American Tradition (1999, Abingdon Press), The Wing (2002, Abingdon Press), Christmas Moccasins (2003, Abingdon Press), and Dancing with Words: Storytelling as Legacy, Culture, and Faith (Discipleship Resources, 2003). He is also the author of Creator Sang a Welcoming Song (2007), and Walking in These White Man Shoes (2007), children and youth resources for the Women’s Dvision School of Missions. The Give-Away was selected to appear on the CBS Christmas Eve special, An American Christmas, produced by the National Council of Churches. His stories, poetry, and art have appeared in numerous journals, periodicals, books, and museums.

Buckley has taught in Nigeria, and Ghana, and served as a lecturer in Native American studies for several universities.

Ray Buckley was a keynote speaker at the Jubilee 2000, Cardinal Maeda Institute. At the invitation of the Council of Canadian Catholic Bishops, he has twice appeared on the nationally televised Canadian Catholic Broadcasting Corporation’s Lenten series. In July 2001, Ray was a keynote speaker at the General Synod of the UCC/Disciples of Christ General Assembly. In 2003, 2004, and 2007, Mr. Buckley was a guest lecturer at the Pontifical Biblical Institute of the Vatican.

Ray was chosen as the Howard Preacher for Phillip’s Theological Seminary, delivered the McDonald Lecture Series (New Mexico), and the Ira Galloway Lecture Series (Peoria, IL). Buckley was one of five keynote speakers at Youth 2007 (SPLAT), sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship.

Such a great story and the artwork is beautiful. I read this to the congregation at the Christmas Eve service. It opens the reader up to a different perspective on the typical birth narrative stories. Highly recommend.

Great book used in religious education class

Both the illustrations and the story are wonderful. The book artfully combines Native American spirituality aspects with Christian aspects. I used this book in a "children's church" class at our Native American / Catholic church at Christmas. The kids loved the story and afterwards made a collage of Jesus in the manager surrounded by all the animals mentioned in the story. The book could be used during Easter as well or during a discussion about Native American give-aways.

Combining Native American spirituality with Christianity

This Christmas picture book is a powerful telling of God's plan for the birth of Jesus. The story is told as a folktale and based on the Native American tradition of give-aways. In this story, the oldest and wisest of every walking and flying animal gather in the oldest forest to to discuss the state of humanity. They recognize how humans have forgotten their connections with God, each other, the animals, and the Earth. Then, the wise turtle proclaims that she will give of herself - her shell - and in her giving, she hopes that humans will be reminded of who they are in connection with all creation. The Creator says, "I must choose to become small, so that they can choose to know me large." The Creator then explains that he will come to Earth as a baby bringing light, hope, and love. The story really shows its power at the end when the oldest tree asks how it can give to this baby, and the Creator answers that the tree will be his support and place of rest at the beginning and the end. The final page reads that the oldest tree wept, "partly for joy and partly for sorrow," as many of us may feel at the news of Jesus' birth and death.

This story gives some insight into the purpose of Jesus' life - to reconnect humanity to God and all of his creation. It shows how all of creation supports each other and God designed us to work in harmony together. It also depicts Jesus as God's gift to us and communicates the greatness of His sacrifice. The ultimate themes are giving and connection, two beautiful and important lessons for children and adults.

Buckley is a Native American and has worked for good relations with the Native American community and the United Methodist Church in many capacities including interim Director of the Center for Native American Spirituality and Christian Study. There are strong Native American elements in this story that deftly combine the emphasis on the oneness of creation with the reverence for God and Jesus. As Buckley explains in the introduction, the animals are illustrated with red on their faces as a sign of hospitality and friendliness. The story itself is based on the Native American tradition of giving away possessions or sacrificing oneself for the community. Children in mixed and Native American communities will learn a great deal about the relationship between Native American spirituality and Christianity.

Using the gentle recommendations in this easy to understand book

Everyone needs this book! It fills a gap where PT, OT, yoga and other modalities cannot reach. My husband and I have both benefited greatly from the techniques presented in this book. We're both medically trained and reasonably fit. Now that we're getting (even) older, certain aches and pains can't be handled with exercise alone. In fact, from this book we've realized that we're initiating a lot of our own pain. Using the gentle recommendations in this easy to understand book, I've improved my long-standing shoulder issues, and my husband can now drive without immediate back pain. I wish I had learned these techniques when I was much younger!

Jonathan Lear is the John U Nef Distinguished Service Professor at the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He is the author of several acclaimed books on philosophy and psychoanalysis, including Aristotle: The Desire to Understand; Love and Its Place in Nature; Open Minded; and Happiness, Death and the Remainder of Life. A WONDERFUL AND IMPORTANT BOOK

As soon as I heard that Jonathan Lear was writing "Freud" for the Routledge Philosophers series, I pre-ordered a copy. I am sorry it's taken me so long to post a review, but I have been savoring the book since it arrived, re-reading portions and making notes . . . as I've done with most of Lear's previous offerings, which have proved invaluable in my own philosophy-psychology study project going back at least 15 years.

The point behind Lear's books, if I may be so bold as to seek out a ruling idea, is that, and I quote, "In general, in the English-speaking world, there has been a regrettable tendency for philosophers and psychoanalysts to ignore each other." And Lear explains why they shouldn't. If I may paraphrase: Psychology without philosophy is personally rewarding and beneficial but limited in scope; philosophy without psychology may be enlightening but personally non-transformative, which is to say that the "great" philosopher may be a wretch whose vast knowledge does nothing to promote inner harmony or expand personal freedom; indeed, his entire study project may be nothing by a psychological aberration!

Lear goes on to say: "Philosophers take seriously such notions as autonomy, authenticity, freedom and happiness in their accounts of human life and its possibilities. But it is difficult to see how these notions can be adequately addressed without taking into consideration" accounts of how individual psychology develops and influences all we think and do. Conversely, psychologists tend "to be ignorant of all the work done by philosophers on the nature of happiness and freedom." Lear aims to heal the "intellectual splitting that has lead to impoverishment on both sides."

Lear wonderfully launches his project by citing Socrates' motto, "Know Thyself," as a starting point for bringing the two camps back together, not that he believes it is likely that anyone can really know himself in any once-and-for-all manner, but because he believes understanding the genesis of the self is fundamental, that without it the philosopher mistakes knowledge for wisdom and forgets ignorance and complexity.

Remember, Socrates is also known (some say disingenuously) for widely proclaiming his ignorance, which starts with the limits of knowing himself. He is, in effect, humbled in the face of his personal complexities in ways that most philosophers are not, and this brings out, I believe, a crucial difference between knowledge and wisdom. Philosophy means, "love of wisdom." But it seems to have become more about knowledge and truth. In other words, it's not uncommon for the philosopher, like the religious fundamentalist, to think he has some absolute knowledge about the world and to make bold claims about those "facts." Wisdom makes no such claims, and therefore comes closer to a way of life than a body of knowledge.

That philosophy started out with wisdom and care of the self is wonderfully illustrated by Pierre Hadot in his, "Philosophy as A Way of Life." I could write pages on Hadot's wonderful book, (as I could about Lear, too) but one quote from Epicurus will do: "We must concern ourselves with the healing of our own lives." Then we may try to learn about the world but with less likelihood of getting waylaid by our hidden agendas. I think Epicurus sums up Lear's project, which is to show that we err when we split psychology and philosophy.

To come back to the book at hand: It goes without saying that Lear writes brilliantly about Freud. The chapter on transference -- and the whole idea of the transference world, in which we're all caught -- is worth the price of admission alone. "Freud" by Jonathan Lear is highly recommended for insights into the first psychoanalyst and for healing the split between two important disciplines!

Exemplary Introduction to Freud's Thought

This smallish book is not for those who have already spent a considerable amount of time with Freud, and it doesn't attempt to be. The project undertaken here by Lear differs significantly from Ricoeur's Hermeneutic or LaPlanche's extensive dictionary. Those looking for a comprehensive history of psychoanalysis, a mitigation of Freud and Lacan, of Freud and Wittgenstein, or similarly advanced readings of Freud should look elsewhere. That said, for those attempting to gain access to the breadth of Freud's work, even and especially those with the intention of eventually arriving at an advanced appropriation of Freud's work, this introduction is better than anything else available. It is telling that we find Richard Rorty, Slavoj Zizek and Sebastian Gardner corroborating on the back cover that there really is no philosophical introduction to Freudian psychoanalysis more worthwhile.

The Kindle edition needs some revising; otherwise excellent book!

The Kindle edition was very carefully crafted, except for one minor detail: the quotations (mostly from Freud) were not properly formatted for using with the black background (I use the Kindle app. in my smartphone). I read Kinlde books mostly at night; thus, it's very cumbersome having to switch between black and sepia. [By the way, for those of you wondering what the black background is for, it's for protecting your eyes when using LCD screens at night. Since I do most of my readig at night, this small mistake is very bothersome]

On the other hand, unlike some other e-publishers, Routledge's Kindle editions tend to be of superior quality. I would certainly recommend them! All the other things on this book, such as links, paragraphing, etc., seem to be working fine.

Regarding the content, this book is the best introduction to Freud I have found so far. I am not a Freud fanboy, so perhaps I am not qualified to say that. However, I have come across three other introductions to Freud:

How to Read Freud

So far, Jonathan Lear's is the most useful and comprehensive for the laymen. I am an International Relations major with only a slight background in philosophy, yet I didn't struggle to understand this book. In fact, what I find hard about reading Freud himself is not his prose, but his content. Freud's ideas seem too far-fetched at times and even though his style is not obscure at all (unlike Lacan's), he is a very deceptive writer. Namely, even though Freud thought of himself as a man of science and his prose is, indeed, very clear, you never really know if he actually meant what he meant.

Also,this book is part of a Routledge series on individual philosophers, but the treatment Freud gets here is not the literary Freud (which I think is the most common approach to Freud in the Anglo-American world). Those of you who want to give Freud a chance won't be disappointed. Jonathan Lear does a critical exposition of Freud without committing any Freud bashing. A very good read indeed! I will certainly look for the other books in the series!
